The Missing I;

Brendan W Vittum
The Missing I;

What did he miss? This the constant
question clawing endlessly
at his psyche - what
unsaid words
should he have heard
in those uncharacteristic,
long,
late,
rambling
discourses on life; people
known - and forgot? What
did he fail to catch
in their midnight chats
of responsibility
and philosophy?

What should he have seen
in those lost conversings
when he should
have been sleeping?

Should he have known
then - as he now suspects
she knew, then - that she
was passing,
cramming,
a life's lessons
into a few short months
of evenings?

What were the signs
missed
that should have told
of what
was about to come
in that April 15,
pre-Easter chat -
will he ever forgive
his annoyed thought
from that night;

she was just
drinking
once more?

Should he have known? What
did he miss? He does not know.
And so that constant question
persists, clawing endlessly
at his psyche.

Five years later
He knows - He
misses.

    Thank you Gianandrea - I think we tell each other a wealth of things which are "lost" in our modern, and superficial, existence of "non-awareness".

    Wow, what a poem! "What were the signs missed that should have told of what was about to come..". That line in particular makes me want to pay closer attention to how I read people's actions and behaviors.
