The Modern Bouffant Hairstyle Makes a Comeback Courtesy of Amy Winehouse

How to Do a Bouffant Hairstyle

Candice

Modern bouffant hairstyles are making a comeback. And just when you thought you could throw out your "bump-it", they make a turn-around... thank you Amy Winehouse!

I love the 60's inspired modern fashions! They know how to play up great features!

Since her recent death, and in remembrance of the amazing voice and style of Amy , 60's styles are on the upswing.

Her signature look was always the bouffant hairstyle, and now that she's gone, her style makes for a hot, modern, and fabulous up-do, and almost everyone looks great wearing this classic hairstyle.

There are many ways to get her hairstyle.

Backcombing, backcombing, backcombing. That is the real secret to creating the bouffant. Some call it "teasing" the hair. This is best done with a rat-tail comb, as the teeth are usually quite fine with these types of combs, and can grab a lot of hair at a time. Though it must be mentioned that if you have very course, or very thick hair, you may want to use a wider-toothed comb so you don't create knots that are almost impossible to remove. The whole idea of "teasing" or backcombing is to create height; a platform so to speak, for the smoothed top layer of hair to lay over.

To achieve the classic bouffant look, a lot of backcombing is necessary, usually at the crown of the head, and smoothing the top layer over the backcombed part. This is how you make the bigger-than-life hair styles. It doesn't hurt to buy one of those "bump-its" either. :) Part off the hair in sections to simplify if needed.

A bouffant doesn't necessarily have to be a drastically puffy up-do; it can just be a classically tied back ponytail with some hightening at the crown of the head (again, achieved with the backcombing, and some hair spray to set it.

Tools you might need for getting the bouffant look are easy to find. Get a rat-tail comb, a wide toothed comb, bobbypins, hair clips (that match your hair color), and optional clip in extensions to either match your hair color, or accent it). Oh, and don't forget the hair spray!

TIPS: Adding dimension with a great cut, a fabulous dye-job, including highlights and lowlights (with complementing hair colors), hair extensions, hair accessories such as bumpits, hair clips, etc.are the best way to create the Amy Winehouse bouffant hairstyle, but above all, have fun with it!

Isn't it funny how these do's keep coming back into style? It isn't my thing, but it would be cute on many women who have the right face for it.
