On Wednesday evening, my husband passed several State Police vehicles and a backhoe in a parking lot just up the road. At first glance, he recalls thinking it was odd that the NY State Police would be using earth-moving equipment. We wouldn't discover until the next morning that they were working on a tip from a neighbor that something was amiss in a quiet neighborhood about 3 miles from my home in New Windsor.
New York State Police dug up the body of a 27-year-old who had been reported missing from Lancaster, Pennsylvania just a few weeks earlier. The shallow grave was in the backyard of a home that her estranged boyfriend and the father of her children had been staying at.
Timothy Handel, 39, was arrested and arraigned for the murder of Kathleen (Katie) Connolly. He is being held in Orange County jail until the grand jury can begin hearing the case on Tuesday.
Take a good look at Handel here. He looks like an ordinary fellow without any telltale signs that he could be a murderer. He grew up in New Windsor and even owned a landscaping business locally. Something went terribly wrong along the way and the monster that lurked inside of him robbed Katie's life and stole the young mother away from her two young girls, aged 2 and 3. I hate to imagine that they witnessed the crime. We may never know for sure and the children are safely tucked away with family members and out of the media spotlight.
I drove past Riley Road this morning on my way to a news assignment and paused briefly at the intersection. I wondered whether anyone on that road will ever forget what happened there.
I know I will remember Katie every time we pass Riley Road on our way to church. I will be thinking of her little girls and the man who murdered their mother.

Post a CommentSad. If we could turn all these monsters green for a day how many shades would there be? Thought provoking.

An outstanding report as always. Thanks!
What a sad thing.
I feel for those little girls. It is just a reminder that we really do not know what someone else is capable of.
