What is Diabetes?
It is a medical condition where the body doesn't produce enough of the chemical that helps it to absorb sugar, this chemical is insulin. Our bodies need sugar to maintain our energy level and be able to function to the best of their abilities. Low insulin means a low level of sugar absorption and a high level of blood sugar. Untreated, diabetes can be lethal to the patient.
Understanding Diabetic Mood Swings
The key to understanding the diabetic mood swings of yourself or someone around you is to first get to know the disease better. The next step is to try to understand the emotions that can go along with having diabetes. This may mean a deep look into yourself if you are the one with the condition, if it is someone that you know then you may have to do some research and try to put yourself in their shoes.
What Causes Diabetic Mood Swings
There are several different factors that contribute to diabetic mood swings. In some, diabetic mood swings are caused by too high of a blood sugar level. This is unhealthy and the diabetic mood swings are your body's way of trying to tell you that something isn't right.
Another cause of diabetic mood swings is too low of a level of blood sugar; this is sometimes referred to as an insulin reaction. Again, your body has been put into a situation that is not healthy for it and it is trying to tell you so by causing your diabetic mood swings. To reverse this effect, consume natural sugars such as drinking orange juice.
There is still one other possible cause of diabetic mood swings, and that is if the sufferer is having a hard time emotionally dealing with their disease. This can happen to anyone, for instance men who suffer from diabetes often experience aggression, impotency, and become afraid that they are unable to satisfy their lover.
Men also get frustrated with being unable to experience the joys of sex themselves, since sex is one of the basic human emotional needs any interruption of this emotional need due to diabetes could definitely lead to diabetic mood swings.
The best way to control the mood swings from this is to talk to someone, if you are uncomfortable talking to family or friends then make an appointment with your doctor.
You should never be afraid to tell your doctor anything, there are laws that prevent them from disclosing the information to anyone else without your permission even if it is your spouse who is asking. You do not have to feel ashamed to tell your doctor of problems such as impotency either; they are a trained medical professional and deal with side effects such as this everyday. They will be best prepared to help you through this tough time in your life.
If you are afraid that a friend or loved one is having a hard time coping with their diabetes, you should not push them to talk about it as this can lead them to be more moody, but instead just make sure that they know you are there if they need someone to talk to.
Controlling Diabetes
Diabetes is a disease that is controlled through diet and exercise. The additional method of control is through a prescription of either pills or injected insulin depending on the type of diabetes that one has. One has to take care of themselves properly to help to prevent diabetic mood swings.
There can be many different situations that will lead to diabetic mood swings, so the best method for preventing or reversing the mood swings is to keep your doctor up-to-date on every little thing that may happen as a result of your diabetes, and make sure that your blood sugar is tested regularly. This along with a good diet and exercise should lead to less diabetic mood swings and a much happier you with a much happier family and much happier friends.
