This time the issue is reproductive health. Congress would like to pass it. The Church vehemently oppose it. Prompting the ordinary folks to ask, why. Really, what is wrong with passing a law on reproductive health? Nothing, according to Congress. Something, according to the Church.
That something is the use of contraceptives which Congress says is okey. The Church says otherwise.
You see, its like this: Congress favors both artificial and natural method, for as long as the population problem will be addressed, the Church advocates natural method only. Both agree population problem has to be addressed, yet, disagree on the method to be employed. Is Congress morally correct? Is the Church politically correct? I daresay, both are dead wrong! Article II, Section 6 of the 1987 Philippine Constitution provides for the separation of the Church and the State. The Fundamental Charter guarantees that the State should exercise a "hands off "policy where Religion is concerned. In the same manner, the Church should not meddle in political affairs. However in a country where more than 80% of the 88 million citizens are Catholics, and where a priest get elected as governor, the thin line of separation has been strained to the point where it is no longer possible to determine who is encroaching and where . So, for the sake of argument, let us just say both are wrong because they seem to "cross" the line each should toe.
While the morally wrong Congress and politically wrong Church engage in a heated debate over the issue, countless children are born to mothers who are not ready to have, yet, another baby and more fathers are working themselves to the bones to provide for the growing brood, with an added mouth to feed yearly.
When will Congress and Church unite for the common good of those who have less in life and, due to their constant disagreement, are having even lesser.
Will Congress and Church correct themselves in time to address the pressing concern for the burgeoning population which is straining our already strained national resources?
