The Morning After Pill

…Or, Sex and Why is it so Bad?

Sarah E Leach
I was listening to the news the other morning… they were talking about how the Morning After pill was going to be released only as a prescription drug and that anyone under 18 would have to have a parent present to get one.

I don't understand this logic. Yes I understand that minors can't make choices for themselves cause they are too stupid to understand what they are doing…. NOT.

Why in this day and age do we as a society try to keep kids in the dark about life? Why do we pretend that they don't understand what is going on in the world? Why do we feel they are not capable of living until they are 18 but we let them drive 16? Why is it ok to die for your country at 18 but you can't drink until you are 21? … ops that is another Oprah.

Do you see my point? Do you see how we as a people contradict all that we teach the young? It's ok to train someone in the art of warfare and give them guns…. BUT don't let them drink... they can't handle that.

Back on topic…

On the way home the other day I hear that the White House has been subpoenaed. The manufacture of the Morning After pill is stating that the FDA has been pressured to make the pill prescription only by the White House. Shocker… not!

Then this morning on the news… the FDA is re-examining the application for the Morning After pill to be issued over the counter. With these limitations; the purchaser must be 18 with valid ID. The pills must be kept behind a counter and not something anyone can pick up off the self. It is "extremely" important that minors do not have free access to these types of medications. We (FDA) feel that a drug of this nature will lead to promiscuity. Ok, the last part could have been said by another organization… I was driving… therefore I might have missed something. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

This all brought up new questions in my mind… I've been pondering this for a few days.

Why does this pill have an 18 year old age limit? Is it possible that it will hurt someone that is younger if they take it?

Do we put age limits on who can buy condoms? Why is this different?

How will an age limit stop a teenage girl or boy from getting someone "of age" to purchase it for him or her? It's not hard to get someone to by you a beer… why would this be different?

I personally don't understand the governments need to force people to be parents. Either you are a parent that talks to your kids or you're not. No age limit on anything is going to force a "kid" to tell their parent that they screwed up and need help. As a teenager, I fixed my screw ups myself or I got some help… But only I made those choices. No one forced me into it…

Tell me this, will you tell your mom when you are 12 that you messed up and got pregnant. Come on… your boyfriend is 17 and if your mother doesn't know about him, you sure aren't going to tell her you F*ed up. This happened to a friend of mine. I was 13 at the time… NO one knew what happened until she delivered the baby on the kitchen floor. The funny and sad thing is… nothing changed in her life… Her mother raised the kid and she became a cheerleader…

My point with this is… no matter what the age… Only "That" person can make the choice. You ask for help, you tell your parents or you keep it inside until you can't hide it anymore.

Which brings me to the next subject, promiscuity.

Why is everyone so afraid of people having and enjoying sex. I am talking about safer sex… the kind they should be teaching in schools… I am not talking about throwing caution to the wild and sleeping with everyone you meet right away… I am talking about sex with people you care for or trust. Why is sex taught to be so wrong?

Why does society force the belief that sex is bad on us? Why is having more than a handful of partners so wrong? Now I have had my share of "strange" relationships and I would consider myself very open minded… So why did it bother me so much that an ex of mine had had sex with over 25 people? I tell you it's because it was pounded into my brain that it was "so wrong".

Why do we preach "one" true love and you need to wait for that person. Doesn't that add a ton of pressure to anyone's "first" time? No wonder so many people rush into marriage at a young age only to get divorced within a few years. Why can't people just love, like, or just mess around?

Why does anyone care? Why do people condemn others for it? and most important... Why does the government need to be involved in my personal life?
