The Most Awkward Valentine's Day of My Life

Neil M.
My wife and I both grew up in Amarillo, Texas. We got married in Amarillo in December 2007. So, February 14, 2008 was our first Valentine's Day after our marriage. When we got married, we had big plans of celebrating the first Valentine's Day after marriage.

In the mid January, I got this job in Houston, which I thought was a milestone in my professional life. I had to join on February 16. So ironically, February 14 was the day when we had to move from Amarillo. We knew that we wouldn't be able to celebrate the Valentine's Day as we had planned. Nevertheless we though that we will at least have cake and wine at the midnight on Valentine's Day.

On February 13, we remained busy packing the things. At midnight, we were so busy trying to pack our microwave in its original packaging that we did not realize that the Valentine's Day has started. We realized it around 1 a.m.

At that time, we were tired, sweaty, and hungry. We rushed out to the nearest takeaway and ordered hamburgers for dinner. Then we went to a bakery and bought a fancy (and expensive) Valentine's Day cake. We also bought some candles and (again a very expensive) wine. We came home and munched hurriedly on our burgers.

Since the inside of our little condo was stuffed with boxes, my wife took the cake, wine and the candles to the parking area outside. When she came back, I was lying in the bed since I was too tired and had a backache. I thought lying for 5 to 10 minutes might do make my aching back a little better. My wife lied next to me and we cuddled thinking that we'll go out in 5 minutes to have the cake and the wine in the candlelight.

Both of us slept almost within no time, although the lights and the TV were on. We did not wake up until eight in the morning. We rushed outside to see what has become of our wine and cake. The cake had ants all over it. We could not find the wine and the candles anywhere. Most probably, they were stolen! We didn't have any time even to mourn our loss because there was still some packing left and we had to leave by car on the same day. So we quickly resumed packing. It took almost an hour and we left home around 9:30 a.m. We had breakfast at a coffee shop and then headed to Houston.

For most of our journey, we talked about our new life in Houston and my new job. We reached our hotel around 10 in the night. Again, we were so tired that after the dinner we slept almost the minute we hit our pillows.

We do not think that we could have a better Valentine's Day if we managed things differently. However, we do remember that, with a smile, as 'the most awkward Valentine's day' in our life.
