So what are the most common forms of computer security attacks?
Corrupted software files: Downloading files is extremely common these days. We download everything from music, to movies, books, even spreadsheets and word processing documents. All of these are susceptible to being corrupted. This could mean serious infection to your computer, or minimal damage. The problem is, you really can't tell until it happens. This sort of attack on your computer can give access to your computer to the attacker, it can use your computer to attack others (as in the DDoS attack mentioned in the Estonia-Russia cyberterrorism attack), it can interfere wit your computer's ability to utilize its resources and run properly, and it can install or delete files from your computer. All of these are debilitating attacks and need to be watched for. Security software won't do it all, so you have to take part you and your computer's security.
Spyware: Or adware as it is also called. These sorts of files can be found in downloads, through pop-up windows or websites, e-mail links, and the like. As mentioned earlier, it is important to play a role in your computer's security. As such, do not click on pop up adds, do not follow e-mail links or even open e-mails from unknown senders, do not download from unreliable sites and then be very wary of all downloads. Spyware or adware causes your computer to pop up excessive ads, redirect you to website you didn't ask for, install unwanted tools or software on your computer, slow your system down, etc... Spyware collects information from your computer about you and redirects advertising information your way. Additionally, spyware can sell your information elsewhere exacerbating the problem at hand. These days there are a number of spyware programs available, and it is best to get and utilize them. It's also best to check for spyware before downloading anything!
Hoaxes or Spam Mail: These can mask viruses, dangerous links, or other harmful activity. These can compromise not only your computer, but others you know as well. Hoaxes and Spam mail send out false stories and e-mails that waste mailbox space and often spread false information.
Identity Theft: This is a huge problem these days and can happen a number of way over the internet. We now have banking accounts online, we pay credit card bills online, we make purchases online; all of these make us susceptible to identity theft online. Identity theft is when personal information such as credit card numbers, social security number, phone numbers, bank account numbers, and the like are stolen and used by an outside source in your name. Because of the prevalence of identity theft it is important to use any and all security features available from banks, credit card companies, and other personal websites. Another important security measure is to create a complex password, and change it often. Do not post personal data or information online, and do not send it over e-mail (even if encrypted). Only buy from reputable sources. Install security systems on your computer and utilize them. Monitor bank accounts and check for unrecognizable bills or charges.
Unfortunately, these are only a few of the most common attacks and there are a number of other attacks out there. It is important to take advantage of all security features available, check your computer for viruses, spyware, and protect yourself, your computer, and all personal information while online. As stated by the FBI, despite the best defense, not all attacks are avoidable. It seems malicious files make their way into our computers with little to no warning. So check often and back up files on a regular basis. If you're having serious problems, or unexplain incidences such as pop ups, installed software you never added, and the like, take your computer in and have it looked at. In some cases you can minimize damage by fixing it right away. Also, don't think because it has happened once it won't happen again, repeat attacks are common so always be on guard.
