"You talkin' to me?" Taxi Driver.
Humphrey Bogart.
"Here's looking at you, kid." Casablanca. Humphrey Bogart, or Bogey as he is affectionately known, is one of the most quotable movie stars of all time, and the weird thing is that most of his best lines all came from Casablanca. "Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, she walks into mine." "We'll always have Paris." "I'm no good at being noble, but it doesn't take much to see that the problems of three little people don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world." It is "Here's looking at you, kid" that has had the most staying power, however, due doubtlessly to the fact that it can be used in regular conversation so much more effortlessly than Bogey's other great lines from Casablanca.
Al Pacino.
"Attica! Attica! Attica!" Dog Day Afternoon. Pacino's most memorable movie quote may be the most difficult of all to work into regular conversation. At the same time, it is the most efficient metaphorical quote. In other words, any time you feel whitey is keeping you down, just starting yelling Attica! It really does make you feel better.
Clark Gable.
"Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn." Gone with the Wind.
Charlton Heston.
"Take your hands off me, you damn dirty ape." Planet of the Apes.
Tom Hanks.
"Life is like a box of chocolates...you never know what you're gonna get." Forrest Gump.
Marlon Brando.
"I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse." The Godfather.
Dustin Hoffman.
"Mrs. Robinson, you're trying to seduce me." The Graduate.
Mandy Patinkin.
"Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." The Princess Bride. This, by the way, happens to be my favorite movie quote of all time. I grew up desperately wanting to play Inigo Montoya. I even wrote a letter to author William Goldman explaining to him why I was the perfect choice to play this role.
Paul Reubens.
"I'm trying to use the phone!" Pee Wee's Big Adventure. Always useful, when shouted in your best Pee Wee voice, when idiots around you don't realize you are, indeed, trying to use the phone.
Barbara Stanwyck.
"There's a speed limit in this state, Mr. Neff. Forty-five miles an hour." Double Indemnity.
Cary Grant.
"I've got a job, a secretary, a mother, two ex-wives and several bartenders that depend upon me, and I don't intend to disappoint them all by getting myself "slightly" killed." North by Northwest.
Tony Curtis.
"I'm Spartacus." Spartacus. This is most famous line, though frankly I prefer "The cat's in the bag and the bag's in the river" from Sweet Smell of Success.
Burt Lancaster.
"Match me, Sidney" Sweet Smell of Success.
Paul Newman.
"Are you crazy? The fall will probably kill you!" Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Much like Bogey in Casablanca, most of Paul Newman's most memorable lines all come from this one movie. My own personal favorite, indeed my favorite movie quote ever, is "I've got vision and the rest of the world wears bifocals." Equally memorable are "If he'd just pay me what he's spending to make me stop robbing him, I'd stop robbing him", "Kid, the next time I say, let's go someplace like Bolivia, let's GO someplace like Bolivia", "Small price to pay for beauty", and "For a moment there I thought we were in trouble."
Edward G. Robinson.
"Mother of mercy, is this the end of Rico?" Little Caesar.
Bette Davis.
"Fast your seatbelts. It's going to be a bumpy night." All About Eve.
Kevin Spacey.
"Well I believe in God, and the only thing that scares me is Keyser Soze." Or, "The greatest trick the devil ever pulled from convincing the world he didn't exist." The Usual Suspects.
John Wayne.
"That'll be the day." The Searchers. This line inspired Buddy Holly to wrote the song of the same name.
Greta Garbo.
"I want to be alone." Grand Hotel.
Jimmy Stewart.
"I wanna live again. I wanna live again. Please, God, let me live again." It's a Wonderful Life. It's a darn shame that this movie is considered the quintessential Jimmy Stewart movie. Pretty much every line of dialogue spoken by Jimmy Stewart in The Philadelphia Story is better than anything in Wonderful Life or any of his other films. My own favorite from Philadelphia Story is "A magnificence that comes out of your eyes, in your voice, in the way you stand there, in the way you walk. You're lit from within, Tracy. You've got fires banked down in you, hearth-fires and holocausts." Try saying those lines to an intelligent woman, guys, and see if she doesn't look at you in a completely different way.
Frances McDormand.
"And I guess that was your accomplice in the woodchipper." Fargo. Perhaps the single most difficult famous movie quote to integrate into non-deviant daily discourse.
Daniel Day-Lewis.
"I drink your milkshake." There Will Be Blood. It's really kind of unfair. Some actors have a whole passel of famous quotes attributed to them, while many quite famous and long-lasting stars never get even one. For instance, until this line came along, how hard would you have to think before you came up with a classic movie quote attributed to Day-Lewis?
Jack Nicholson.
"Heeeeeere's Johnny!" The Shining. Just the most famous of many, many memorable quotes that Mr. Nicholson has given his own unique stamp over the course of his career. Quite possibly the owner of more memorable lines from more memorable movies than any other actor.

Post a CommentIncidentally, that line from "It's a Wonderful Life" has probably helped more people than even fans of the movie know. But I agree that the dialogue in "Philadelphia Story" is underrated. Well, it was one of the last of the Screwball comedies where witty and poetic dialogue were its vital components...
You had me curious about Daniel Day-Lewis movie quotes--so I looked up to see if there are any. Well, I found a lot of quotes said by Daniel Day-Lewis himself rather than in character. A psychological portrait or not, more than half of the quotes from him started with the letter "I." ;) Ironic or not that "I drink your milkshake" also starts with the big ego "I." At this point in his career, Day-Lewis probably does drink everybody else's milkshake as an actor, which makes him deserving of starting every attributable quote with "I." Anyway, I love most to all of your picks here--though I'm starting to find a lot of quotes from "Dr. Strangelove" so quote-worthy of late. I just watched it again recently and still laugh and get chills at the darkest of its dark satire. "Gentlemen, you can't fight in here. This is the War Room!" might end up in my Top Ten pretty soon. I know this article did well for you, so looking forward to Part Deux...
Timothy - I love your treatment of Movies and Hollywood stuff in general. First came across you after I wrote my own 10 Movie Quotes. Now, in this one, I see we've quoted some of the same great actors - and one of the same lines - one of my favorite movie lines of all times - from Kevin Spacey in the Usual Suspects - the greatest trick the devil every played was convincing us he doesn't exist. If interested, You can see mine at http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/642311/10_movie_quotes_that_can_affect_our.html. Good job on some of your political stuff, too. I know you don't "need" anyone else to do this, but I added you to my favorites.
I really liked hearing about your favorite movie lines as well. Butch Cassidy is truly full of great quote, as you indicated. I didn't know that the John Wayne movie title inspired Buddy Holly to write that song. Thanks for that info!
You're an avid movie goer I see!
