The Most Fun 2011 Family Fun Runs and 5Ks in Denver

Jaipi Sixbear
Denver's 5K family fun runs encourage fitness, provide entertainment and benefit some wonderful organizations. The only problem is choosing which ones you'll participate in. The Mile High City as a whole, works hard to stay in shape. That means there are over a hundred charity walks and races every year. My youngest daughter ran a half marathon last year as well as participating in dozens of other races and walks. This year, she's trying to talk us all into registering for one of these Denver area family fun runs.

Apex Father's Day 5K and Family Fun Run
13150 W. 72nd Avenue, Lakewood
Sunday June 19, 2011
5K starts at 8 a.m.
1K fun run starts at 9 a.m.

As a single parent I took on the role of mother and father for over 20 years. It's fitting that I participate (along with the rest of the family) in this Father's Day race. Luckily, they allow both male and female participants to enter the race and the ugliest tie contest. That's what makes this family fun run so hilarious. The participants wear their ugliest ties through the whole event. There's also the Fathers Day Car Show, plus live music and activities for kids.

If you don't win a prize for the ugliest tie, you might win one for either the 5K or the 1K family fun run. Do you like pancakes? That's a silly question. Who doesn't like pancakes? A pancake breakfast is available free with adult registration, or for a small fee for seniors or those under 17. Why? Participating in the fun run is free for them.

Aurora Trails Day 5K
Aurora Reservoir
5800 S. Powhaton Rd., Aurora, Colorado
Saturday June 4, 2011
5K check in 8 a.m.
Trails Day Bike Ride 8:30 a.m.

This event is held at my favorite Denver area reservoir and swim beach. I'm thinking my daughter might just talk me into this one. Why? Because after the race, I can take a dip to cool off. If I'm not that into the whole 5K run, I could also join the Trails Day Bike Ride. This is not your typical bike ride, mind you. There's Geocaching involved.

Riding bikes and treasure hunting? I'm betting the grand-kids will love this one. Plus, they get to go swimming afterward? What a fun way to spend a summer day in the great outdoors. For the rest of us, there's also the Wellness Fair to peruse. My daughter will love the fact that she gets to run on a certified 5K course. Seems my whole family will be happy at this fun run (or bike).

Liberty Run 4 Mile
Firecracker Kids Fun Run

Washington Park
1000 S. Downing, Denver
Monday July 4, 2011
8:30 a.m.

It isn't exactly a 5K. Still, it's a good long run for the adults. It's also a great time for the kids. Show your patriotism (or just your silly nature) by competing to win a prize for the best red, white and blue get up. A prize will be awarded to one adult and one child for their original costumes. Where did I put those t-shirt lites?

Don't forget to sign the kids up for the Firecracker Kids Fun Run. After the race, enjoy the beauty of Washington Park. Have a picnic. Let the kids burn off more energy on the playground. Did I mention the post-race expo? That's food, fun and entertainment for the whole family. Better go home and take a nap before you attend your favorite Denver fireworks show!
