The Most Haunted House in England is for Sale

Wymering Manor in Portsmouth is the Most Haunted House in England

Tony Payne
What is probably England's most haunted house, Wymering Manor in Portsmouth, Hampshire, goes up on the auction block today for £375,000 ($500,000).

Not only is Wymering Manor supposed to be the site of multiple hauntings, it also looks creepy (see photos). Security guards in fact have refused to work on the site alone at night.

Wymering Manor was actually featured on the television show Most Haunted Live in May 2006, and the private organisation that purchased the property the same year did intend to convert it into a hotel with function rooms, however this never took place and the City of Portsmouth is again trying to sell it.

The haunting at Wymering Manor includes the sounds of children whispering, and strange apparitions, but given the great age of the property, there are no clear ideas as to who might be haunting there.

Wymering Manor is actually the oldest building in Portsmouth, and the settlement at Wymering was mentioned in the Domesday Book. The earliest record of it is the year 1042, when it was owned by King Edward The Confessor, but after the Battle of Hastings in 1066 ownership passed to King William The Conqueror.

It is known that there was a Roman settlement on this site from around 43AD to 408AD, and it may have been the site of a Roman outpost camp.

Most of the current building however dates back to the 16th century, but parts do contain Roman materials, and the cellars date back to Saxon times.

Since this is only 15 miles from where I live, it would be rather interesting to spend a night there - but there is no way I would do it alone...

Drat drat and double drat!!! There is a Ghost Hunt there in October - but it's sold out already.

Well when I was growing up I could swear that it was called the Doomsday Book, but now it's always written as the Domesday Book. I don't know when it changed, or if I always thought it was Doomsday.

Is it the "domesday" or "doomsday" book? What a place, and fairly affordable by American property standards! My measely twin brick and stone house is worth over $200,000! I want it!

Imagine the spirits you could contact living there. You write such interesting stuff.

That's a fascinating story. I love history and would love to explore this place. Maybe next time I get to England ;)

What an interesting history! This is the kind of place I'd like to restore...at least the gardens and grounds. Whispering wouldn't bother me, but screaming might.

Excellent report on this, Tony. Thanks!

Fascinating. I'm always intrigued by ghosts.
