The Most Important Club in Your Golf Bag

Scary Good
The most important club in any golfer's bag may not be what you expect. It's not that 300+ dollar driver that you bought. Or those really nice forgiving irons you may have. In fact the most important golf club in any golfer's bag is their putter. At first that may seem like quite a stretch to think that the putter is that important, however when you actually stop to think about how often you use the putter, and how many shots you actually take with the putter, you start to understand how important that club really is.

Unless you happen to get lucky and manage to chip the ball into the hole, then you should be using your putter on every hole. First of all you can't really say that about any other club. Some holes you may have to chip which would require you to use a wedge or whatever club it is that you chip with, however you should not have to chip on every hole. You are going to hit your driver on quite a few holes, but you wouldn't pull out your driver on a par 3, or a hole where you need pinpoint accuracy. Therefore as you can see the putter is the club that you use the most during a round.

Now it is time to do a little number crunching. Let's just say that on every hole during a round of 18 it takes you 2 putts to put the ball in the hole. That would be 36 strokes a round just with your putter. Now let's say you manage to one putt 6 greens. That would be 30 strokes now, 6 less than before. If you take into account your last round and you subtract 6 strokes, I can almost guarantee that it makes your score look a lot better.

One of the best things about putting is that it is extremely easy to practice. 99.9% of all golf courses will have a putting green that you can go and practice on. All you have to do is simply take a few practice balls, and go out and work out your putting stroke. Another great thing about putting is that buying a putter can be relatively inexpensive, compared to the price of other clubs in your bag. However don't be mistaken that all putters are cheap, as the price of some of these little sticks will be shocking if you have never gone shopping for a putter before.

One final example of how much putting means in golf is to take a look at professional golfers. Everyone knows how amazing Tiger Woods is at the game of golf. What some people don't realize is how good he is at putting. Next time you watch Tiger Woods when he is winning a tournament pay attention to how many longer putts he makes. You also have to keep in mind that the greens he is putting on are the hardest in the world.

Golf is an extremely difficult game that can never be mastered. Even the professionals have off days. However golf is a game that can be practiced, and with the right mindset can become much easier. One of the things that can make the game easier is the ability to putt well. Putting well will shave strokes off of every round, and will eventually lead to better rounds.

Well, I agree and disagree. For professionals, sure, the putter is where the dough is made. But for hackers, if your drive doesn't get you in a near decent position, then you're going to be scoring high numbers all day long - your putter's no good if you're already on double-bogey by the time the ball hits the green.

Nicely written. Putting can make or break a good player.
