Losing weight is not an easy journey. It is a goal that is attainable, but it is not without its ups and downs along the way. How many times have you started a diet on January 1st as a part of your New Year's resolution only to throw in the towel a couple of days later because you had a weak moment? If you have, don't despair. This is common. The good news is that it is never too late to start again.
I have spent many years on this weight loss journey. I have gained and lost more times than I can count. I know the calorie count of most foods. I know how much I should be exercising in order to lose weight, as well as how many daily calories I should be eating. I know all of the "rules" of the game. Still, that doesn't make it any easier to actually do the work and reach my goal. Over the past 8 months I have lost over 50 pounds, and the number one reason I believe I have been able to do it is because I have been persistant. I have refused to give up.
When I slipped up and ate chips or candy, which are huge trigger foods for me, there was a part of me that wanted to just throw in the towel and give up. I felt guilty. I felt like a failure. But something inside of me refused to admit defeat. I put those incidences behind me right away and started over in the next moment. Whereas I could have easily reached for candy bar # 2, I chose to move forward. I didn't do this just once. I have done it over and over and over again over these past 8 months. In regard to exercise, I have done the same. If I plan to walk 4 days a week, but skip a day, it would be easy to beat myself up and stop exercising altogether. Instead, I just go easy on myself and get right back on my plan. As a result, I have lost weight.
If you are tempted to throw in the towel after one small defeat, remember that a candy bar is not going to blow your entire diet. Get right back on track if you veer off. If you veer off 20 times, get back on the track 20 times. It's that simple. Don't give up, and you will find that your goal is soon within reach.
