The Most Logical Reasons to Become Vegan

Today, people who choose to go vegan -- that is, they decide not to eat any animals or animal products, or things produced from animals -- are now much more accommodated for than they have been in the past, with more and more people becoming vegan every day. Twenty, thirty years ago, veganism was regarded with disdain and was greatly misunderstood.

There are a variety of reasons to adopt a vegan lifestyle, health and peace of mind being just two commonly cited ones.

If we evolved from primates, we probably evolved with some of their eating patterns intact. This would make sense, right? Most primates get about 90% of their nutrition from plants, fruits, and seeds. Their bodies are far stronger than ours--so we can't really claim that this kind of diet makes one weak.

In the average American, there is one pound of unmoving meat stuck in the colon. This allegedly contributes to colon cancer, makes one feel bloated, and generally disrupts the natural workings of the colon. This is mostly because the normal American diet does not contain enough fiber. Fiber would help remove this "stuck" meat in the colon. A vegan diet is high in fiber.

The human digestive tract is too long to be able to easily digest meat. We have relatively long digestive tracts as compared to other animals; this means that we are more geared, evolutionarily, towards high-fruit-and-vegetable diets. More naturally carnivorous animals have digestive tracts that are shorter, so the meat can be digested and removed before it can do any damage. In the human digestive tract, meat has been shown to begin to rot if it isn't pushed out quickly.

Think of the animal cruelty. Most people would not want to go out and kill the animal they would be eating for dinner that evening. Would you? In addition, think of the conditions the animals undergo. Corn is used to fatten the animals up, many live with their fecal matter en-toe, and very often are injected with growth hormones and antibiotics. Did you know that pigs are actually one of the only animals that will not overeat if presented with an unlimited supply of food? We, humans, inject them with chemicals that put them in a constant state of hunger, so they can become fat for our eating. And don't forget about the interesting quality of the pig's metabolism: it's dietary intake is turned into flesh about 5 times as quickly as in other animals. The chemicals do not cook out all the way.
