The Most Popular Celebrities on Twitter, Facebook and MySpace

Who Ranks in the Top Ten on the Social Networking Sites?

Jan Peterson
Social Networking is a great way to keep in touch with friends and family. It is also a way for fans to link to their favorite movie stars, rock stars, athletes and other famous people. Which celebrities have the biggest social network following as of June 2010?

The Top Ten Famous Twitterholics

April 2009, many of us followed Ashton Kutcher's popularity contest challenge to CNN, as he raced to reach a million followers first. Ashton won the contest, and donated $100,000 to Malaria charity, honoring the pledge he made. See the video of Ashton crossing the finish line in this YouTube video.

Even though he beat out an entire television network, Ashton only rates second on the Top 100 Twitterholics list today. According to Twitaholic.com, can you guess who landed the top ten celebrities spots? Here they are:

1. Britney Spears
2. Ashton Kutcher
3. Ellen DeGeneres
4. Lady Gaga
5. Barack Obama
6. Kim Kardashian
7. Oprah Winfrey
8. Taylor Swift
9. John Mayer
10. Ryan Seacrest (Ryan is actually eleventh on the list, with Twitter #10.)

The Top Ten Most Popular Celebrity Facebook Pages

According to Experian's stat-counter, Hitwise, Facebook ranks #1 on their Top Social Networking Websites List, based on weekly visits. Alexa ranks them #2.

Facebook allows celebrities to share more information with their fans, and longer post space for fans to gush than Twitter's 140 characters. But Facebook is not limited to individuals, as it also includes popular Facebook game applications and a way for businesses to reach their customers. Sorting through the combined All Facebook's Facebook Page Leaderboard, following are the top celebrity fan pages, which, in my opinion, contain a few surprises!

1. Michael Jackson
2. Barack Obama
3. Lady Gaga
4. Vin Diesel
5. Megan Fox
6. Will Smith
7. Lil Wayne
8. Taylor Swift
9. Selena Gomez
10. Lily Allen

Most Popular Celebrity MySpace Searches

According to Big Boards.com, MySpace has 4,150,200 members to date, and Hitwise ranks them #3 on the Top Networking Websites list. Their user base is primarily aimed at youth, which may explain why Barack Obama didn't land a spot on this list! Finding a statistical source for MySpace proved to be more difficult than Twitter or Facebook, and not as thorough as the other two, but using the MySpace Top Searches, here are the celebrities generating the most interest with the younger crowd today, June 17, 2010.

1. Gabriel Iglesias
2. Selena Gomez
3. Matthew McConaughey
4. Lady Gaga
5. Gucci Mane
6. Nicki Minaj
7. Eminem
8. Taylor Swift
9. Trey Songz
10. Miley Cyrus

Social Networking is such an integral part of our existence today, that it is almost hard to imagine life without them. Isn't it amazing to realize that MySpace launched the first version of its website in August 2003, Facebook on February 2004, and the first Tweet was sent by Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter, on March 21, 2006?

Celebrity Fan Clubs have been around forever as a way for everyday people to follow the goings-on of their favorite actor or singer, and ban together to swoon in adoration. Now, the use of these three social networking sites has made it easier to Stargaze on a near-personal level, and sometimes stay one step ahead of the paparazzi when it comes to the latest Hollywood gossip. Makes you wonder what technology has in store for us in this decade, doesn't it?
