While you may not think of South America as a place to find plentiful and delicious pizza it certainly is. In Buenos Aires pizza is economical and a very popular with the locals, travelers and expats. It is difficult to walk more than three blocks in Buenos Aires without stumbling upon a pizzeria. You can buy pizza by the slice or by the pie. You can have your pizza at the pizzeria, to go, or delivered right to your home, hostel or hotel room.
Pizza in Buenos Aires comes with your choice of a variety of toppings and is served with or without sauce. Often you will find sliced tomatoes on top of the cheese and ham underneath. My favorite pizza topping is Roquefort cheese but the favorite pizza topping of the locals seems to be ham. There are even stuffed varieties of pizza where you eat one piece and that is filling enough for your entire meal.
Although the locals from Buenos Aires love their meat, vegetarians can delight in the many pizza options offered in Buenos Aires. Often the pizzeria will also serve homemade empanada, Argentina's most popular snack food. Empanadas filled with chicken, ground beef and vegetables (usually greens) are the most popular.
The cheapest and most popular pizzeria in Buenos Aires is Ugi´s pizzeria. Ugi´s specializes in pizza and does not serve empanadas. Ugi´s pizzeria can be found throughout the city of Buenos Aires and is recognizable by its plain black and white sign, and its minimalist black and white interior. During lunchtime and dinner Ugi´sis crowded but the serve your pizza fast. The smallest portion is "un quarto" which is a quarter of a pizza. The cost is only three pesos which at this time is less than one US dollar. A large pizza is available for ten or twelve pesos depending on the location.
La Continental is just as popular and easily found as Ugi´s, with many locations throughout Buenos Aires. La Continental serves both pizza and empanadas and also serves wine and sodas. A piece of pizza at La Continental will cost between two and three pesos, so it is a little more expensive than Ugi´s. But you get what you pay for because La Continental is open until three or four in the morning and provides many tables and waiters to serve you. La Continental is crowded late into the night and is always filled with Buenos Aires locals. You can recognize it easily by the big read sign with La Continental written in script.
Both Ugi´s and La Continental offer delicious and cheap pizza that can be enjoyed by meat lovers and vegetarians alike.
