The Most Underpaid Baseball Pitchers in the Major Leagues

Which Pitchers Did the Most Last Season for the Least Pay?

Statsman
These were the most underpaid pitchers in baseball in 2006, based upon their baseball stats and their salaries. I am only listing pitchers who have pitched in the Major Leagues for at least four years. (Everything is relative here, as calling someone who earns over $327,000 or more a year a bargain, only makes sense in baseball and a few other occupations.)

Brandon Webb (Diamondbacks) - $2.5 million in earnings for a pitcher who went 16-8, with a 3.10 ERA in 235 innings is just not right. Worth far more in pay.

Johan Santana (Twins) - he's the best pitcher in baseball, but earned only $8.75 million last year while going 19-6, with a 2.77 ERA.

Aaron Harang (Reds) - earned just $2.35 million while going 16-11, with a 3.76 ERA in 234 innings, and he did it in a very tough pitchers park.

Bronson Arroyo (Reds) - his earnings are not as bad as his teammate Harang's, as he made $3 million for going 14-11, with a 3.29 ERA in 240 innings, but he was still a bargain for the Reds last year.

Erik Bedard (Orioles) - went 15-11, with a 3.76 ERA and earned just $1.4 million.

Jeremy Bonderman (Tigers) - earned just $2.3 million for going 14-8, with a 4.08 ERA in 214 innings, for the Central Division Champs.

Nate Robertson (Tigers) - was even more of a bargain than Bonderman, as he earned just $400,000 while going 13-13, with a 3.84 ERA in 208 innings.

John Lackey (Angels) - went 13-8, 3.56 ERA in 217 innings, and earned just $3.3 million.

Chris Capuano (Brewers) - 11-12, 4.03 ERA in 221 innings is surely worth more than the $450,000 he earned last year for the Brew Crew.

Dan Haren (A's) - earned just $550,000 last year, while going 14-13, 4.12 ERA in 223 innings. Another Oakland A's bargain player for smart GM.

Jake Peavey (Padres) - even in a down year, 11-14, 4.09 ERA in 202 innings, with 215 K's, he's still worth more than the $2.5 million the Padres paid him last year.

Chris Carpenter (Cardinals) - ace earned $5 million for going 15-8, 3.09 ERA in 221 innings for World Series champs. Worth more money.

Carlos Zambrano (Cubs) - 16-7, 3.41 ERA in 214 innings worth more than the $6.5 million the Cubs paid him last season.

Brett Myers (Phillies) - went 12-7, 3.91 ERA in a bandbox and earned just $3.3 million. After what he did to his wife, he's lucky to have a job. Whatever he earns, he should donate most to woman's shelters in the Philadelphia area.

Joe Borowski (Marlins) - now with the Indians. Was a real bargain last year, earning just $327,000, the major league minimum, while going 3-3, 3.75 ERA, with 36 saves.

Frankie Rodriguez (Angels) - saved 47 games in 51 attempts, with a 1.73 ERA, while earning just $3.8 million. Worth more money.

J J Putz (Mariners) - came out of nowhere to save 36 games, with a 2.25 ERA, with 104 K's in 78 innings, while earning just $415,000.

Mike Gonzalez (Pirates) - now with Atlanta. Earned a paltry $347,000 while saving 24 games in 24 attempts, with a 2.17 ERA. How will he do for the Braves this year?

Rafael Soriano (Mariners) - also with Atlanta now. 2.25 ERA, with 65 K's in 60 innings last year as a set up man, while earning $450,000. Worth more money.

Wang! Otherwise nice list, good job. WOW Santana is going to be up for a big pay day soon!

Great article. Yeah, you could go nuts including guys like Wang who are still on their league minimum contracts. This is better. My Tigers have Bonderman & Robertson pretty cheap, plus Verlander & Zumaya on their min contract. But I think we spend all our savings on Kenny Rogers.

If only my husband who is currently in Iraq with over 17 years in the Marine Corps and a degree under his belt could see a fraction of their salaries. But I guess entertainment is more important to corporate America than freedom. :

J.J. Putz...man that's still funny to me. Good article

You forgot Wang. Runner-up in the AL Cy Young. He won 19 games and was paid about $350,000.
