The Mountain Between You

Jeanne Sparks-Carreker
Every time you leave her hanging

On a cliff of disappointment,

Left with her many emotions that

Fend for themselves and return empty,

I think of the many times she has

Hung in that same spot before,

Though the time you waste in

Rescuing her grows lengthy.

She hangs upon that cliff

Entirely without your sympathetic touch,

Though growing weary, she thinks,

If she lets go she will surely die.

So she holds on to the side of the mountain,

With no hand to ever pull her up,

Aware that the only hand she needs

Will not ever come by.

I realize, as she hangs there

In agony and suspense,

That you would rather leave her

Hanging there that way.

It seems to excuse you by reason,

And you have utterly no remorse.

I think it's time, even risking death,

That I finally just pull her away.
