The Musicians of New Jersey: Frank Sinatra

Hoboken's Own Favorite Son Lives on in Our Memories

Diane Zoller-Ciatto
Francis Albert Sinatra was born December 12, 1915 in Hoboken, New Jersey. There probably was not a person alive during my lifetime that did not know who he was; at least in the free world. However, living up the hill from Hoboken and having family living there throughout my youth, one could not avoid hearing his songs on the radio or television or knowing where he used to live.

To say he was a legend is putting it mildly. He was an Academy Award winning actor as well as a singer. In the 1940's the teenage girls swooned for him the way the Baby Boomers screamed for the Beatles or today's tweens love Justin Bieber.

Sinatra had three children by his first wife, Nancy Barbato; they had Nancy, Frank Jr. and Tina. Sinatra married three more times; to Ava Gardner, Mia Farrow and Barbara Marx who he was married to until his death.

He was famous for songs that became such standards as; "Come Fly with me," "My Way" written by Paul Anka and the all time favorite "Theme from New York, New York."
Frank Sinatra suffered a heart attack in February of 1997 and made no more public appearances. In May of 1998 he had a fatal heart attack. On May 20, his funeral was held at the Roman Catholic Church of the Good Shepherd in Beverly Hills with 400 friends and relatives in attendance and hundreds of mourners outside. Great article and memories. My brother and I attended his concert when he came to Brisbane many years ago. We were 4 rows from the central stage and Frank leaned over and looked at me while singing one of his songs. He had great audience appeal. His son Frank Jnr. conducted the orchestra. Appearing with him were Steve Lawrence and Edie Gorme.

Well done. Whenever we play cards, we put on Sinatra music.

Good article. I loved his early songs. His voice slipped in his older days.

Great write-up. I wish music could go back to that era instead of what we have now.
