The island also seems to be able to affect the human inhabitants. The men have five times the normal sperm level, and the women who conceive on the island die. This is due to their body treating the foetus as foreign invader. The island also has the ability to heal which we cannot. An example of this is that Locke was paralysed from the waist down, and therefore was wheelchair bound. However since he arrived on the Locke has gained mobility of his legs.
The island seems to have certain special attributes that through out its history people have researched and have tried to exploit. The DHARMA Initiative is a company that set up different stations on the island to research some of the attributes, such as the electromagnetism. However there are two people who are trying to defend it, they are Locke and Ben.
One of the biggest mysteries of the island is the invisibility on most navigating devices. The only way people have gained access to the island is by following some sort of signal, like the Sonar beacon on the Looking Glass station. Most people find the island by accident, this is seems to be done by crashing the vehicle they were travelling in. Leaving the island seems to be as impossible as finding it. Desmond spent several weeks attempting to leave but ended up back at the island. However there does seem to be a way to leave the island, as Ben gave Michael instructions on how to do so.
The main island is miles wide, with mountain ranges on the east and west sides. Through out the island there are small streams that the people use as drinking water. Not far off the shore of the island is a smaller island known as Alcatraz. The island seems to have the remains of a civilization that lived on the island before the Others. There are the remains of various statutes, like the giant foot with only four toes.
There are some theories that fans have came up with. One theory is that the island is just a hallucination or in the head of some one who is unconscious. However the latter of these two seems to be discredited as with the episode "Dave". Another theory is the island is purgatory. This was turned down by J. J. Abrams. Others are that spaceships or aliens influence the island and everyone on the island. The idea that the island is a reality TV show and the castaways are unwitting housemates, was dismissed by Carlton Cuse.
