The Mystery of the Barn

Judith Buskohl
The view was peaceful and everyone that had the privilege to happened on the view simply would go 'Ahhhhhhh!" People would simply want to take pictures with their cameras as well as their heart. This was a view that you wouldn't want to forget.

The red barn stood in the middle of the valley surrounded by green trees and colorful flowers. Bee could be heard buzzing from one flower to the next. Birds chirped their sweet songs as if to welcome anyone that came close. A warm breeze was blowing the tops of the trees around.

As far as the human eyes could see the view was peaceful and would make you feel contend to be there. The view would melt any problem away from the person and all they would want to do was sit there to relax. It would leave a lasting impression of peace and quiet. Groups of people would come to the spot just to sit on the benches and feel their bodies relax.

Karen happened upon the red barn one day and she felt the instant change of her mood from angry to peaceful. Shy wondered why everyone was staying outside the barn instead of going in and being the history buff she was, she had the urge to go inside to see what the barn looked like inside. To stand there and soak in the history.

One of her slender hands came up to rest on the handle of the barn and she was getting ready to pull the door open, when she first heard the man's ghostly voice.

"You don't want to go in there."

She laughed slightly as she turned toward the voice and was startled to see no one standing there. Thinking to herself that she had imagined the voice she turned back to the door and started to put her hand back where it had been.

All of a sudden her arm was pushed aside by a very cold touch and once again she heard the ghostly voice inside her ear. "You don't want to go in there! Harmful things will happen to you!"

Out of the corner of her brown eyes, she sensed a movement more than seeing it. As she slowly turned in that direction she could see an object floating out of the corner of her right eye. Closing, her eyes to stop the imagine she knew without looking the object would still be there when she opened her eyes. She opened her eyes slowly and came face to face with a ghostly elderly man's head floating in the air.

Her mouth dropped open wide as if to scream ,but nothing came out except air. Her hand flew up to her chest where her heart was beating like a race horse and it felt like her heart was going to explored in her chest. Eyes wide as she tried her hardest to take in what she had seen and she felted rooted to the ground. Tears flooded upward to her eyes as she realized that it had vanished into thin air. She felt scared and wrapped her arms around herself to ward off the imagine

Laughter reached her ears from the people around her and she expected to see those people pointing at her. Her brown eyes went from one person to the next and she couldn't believe that she was the only one to see it. A single crashed into her mind as if a speeding train was crashing around up in her head. "You are losing it, dear Karen, no one saw it except you."

She walked with determination in her step, yanked the door open, and went in. Seeing nothing out of the ordinary she took she cautiously steps toward the middle of the barn and she started to feel disappointed that nothing special was in there. She turned to leave when......

When she started to hear voices and somehow she knew they were looking for her. Calling her name, they were getting closer and she knew within herself that this mob was not looking to praise her. They meant to harm her-she had to hid ,but where?

Looking around she saw a small cabinet that she could hid in. Running over there and opening the door she started to try to fit herself in the cabinet. Feeling scared she shut the door almost the same time the mob crashed through the door.

Looking out she saw that it was dark time instead of day light. How could that be? Falling out of the cabinet she ran for the door, pushing it open as she crashed through it. Daylight hit her eyes and she was blinded from the brightness of the sun. She stopped and looked back.

Outside was the bright sun and people laughing. Stepping back inside of the barn she could once again she could hear the voices of the mob and the scared feeling washed over her. Once outside again she slammed the door shut and walked away.

On the edge of the valley, she stopped to look back and half expected the mob to come crashing through the doors of the barn. She was ,so confused on what had happened back there. Did she imagined the whole thing or was she actually losing her mind? Was it a time machine of sorts One thing she knew for sure she was going to get hold of someone to come back out here with her. ,But who?
