The Mystery of the Visiting Golden Eagle

Harold Dean Sink
Heading off to work something caught my sight.
Circling in the sky above a bird flew in the light.

Dark brown were its feathers spread out for all to see.
Why is this hawk flying around looking down at me?

Next I knew it looked away elsewhere.
What was it looking at down here?

There was a stray cat in the yard when I left for the garage.
What sort of thing was this bird looking at? Was it a mirage?

Later that day, when I came home, I searched for what it saw.
It must have been underneath all these limbs and straw.

I will tend to it later, as right now it is inconsequential.
Surely that cat will be back and finish whatever was its meal.

The very next day, I headed off for work.
That same bird was flying above as if to smirk.

I looked again to identify its type.
Twas not a hawk like I thought it was.
It was not even a Kite.

This stately bird was none other than a golden eagle.
Surely it is far from home looking for food that is crucial.

Golden, not yet, as this one is young.
Its parents sent it off to learn.

Twas later I found a dead rabbit on the ground.
I cannot believe a cat had eaten it round.

Poor little rabbit had no idea
That it would become food
To a cat and a bird.

No more do I see that cat in my yard.
Did the golden eagle think of it to discard?

This will remain a mystery until...
That cat shows up again making its fill.

I hope that it knows there's a golden eagle to tend with.
If it doesn't, it will soon find out herewith.

Alas, the golden eagle is gone.
At least it honored me with a pose
To snap for a photo to go with this prose.
