Many coin collectors not only try to collect old coins but coins that are made out of gold or silver. Sometimes gold and silver coins can sometimes be more valuable for the metal content than what the actual face value of the coins is as well as the collectible value of the coin.
One common purchase that most coin collectors try to seek in their coin buying expeditions is to find coins with errors. Error coins are common throughout the entire production of coins in the United States. Most error coins are struck wrong at the mint and somehow find their ways into the circulation of the American economy. Some common errors among minted coins are double-die obverse or coins produced on different planchets than what they were intended to be produced on. Also, a lot of error coins happen do to the dies at the mints that produce the coins.
One would think that once the production of the coins are completed at the mints that the quality control measures would remove all imperfect coins; however, some error coins seem to make their way into circulation.
Even in today's coin production times you would think technology would eliminate errors in coins making their way into circulation into the financial markets. However, some of the latest state quarters produced have known errors on them and this in turns make them valuable coins sought out by coin collectors all over the world.
Most error coins are more valuable than a coin struck right from the mint. The lower the quantity of error coins known the more valuable that specific coin is to collectors of coins. One of the first places a person that collects coins should look for error coins is in their pocket change. If you don't find an error coin in your pocket change you may just find a valuable coin that would be otherwise spent as common pocket change.
The Internet has really changed the markets of collectibles and coin collectors all over the world can find just about any type of error coin they're looking for by doing a search on the web. There is numerous coin auctions held online where you as a collector can find any type of coin you're looking for to add to your collection.
