The Name Generator for Writers List - Serious and Funny Random Name Generators from Fantasy, WOW, & DND to Celebrity Babies and More

Will Wright
If you're the average American, you get to name about 2.5 babies in your lifetime. If you're a writer of fiction, you might have to generate that many names an hour or less. When you think about the amount of time a couple spends in picking out just the right name, it's no wonder writers sometimes have a difficult time creating names for hundreds of fictional characters. With that in mind, here are a few random name generators for writers to make that aspect of writing easier. If you're not a writer, most of these name generators are just for fun.

Fake Name Generator
Although the title is fake name generator, these names look and sound like the real thing. This generator is one of the most detailed you will find. It not only creates a name, it also generates an address, email address, phone number, mother's maiden name, credit card number, social security number - virtually a whole fictional person.

It creates both realistic Euro-American names and Hispanic names.

Fantasy Name Generator
This great little tool is more complex than the average generator. It allows you to set parameters such as name length, preponderance of consonants and vowels, fun names, romantic names and many more options.

Character Name Generator
This generator also uses a number of parameters to give you more control over the name. This one is primarily for creating Dungeons and Dragons characters, but if you're writing fantasy, the names can be useful for writers as well.

Just for Fun Name Generators

Of all the names I just generated the pirate one is my favorite, so just call me Frownin' Jezebel Napier from now on.

  • Michael K. Miller 2/2/2008

    * Follow-Up* Maybe you already "field-tested" yer generators, Will - hope so. The Pirate Name Generator was too alluring for me not to try. (Maybe it's because I'm on THE West Coast and/or I have a pirate alter ego - my legs, eyes, and hands are just fine, thank ye, but I do like parrots). Should we address you as "Yellow Hubert Dawkins" now? (rotflmao)... Arrr!, Cap'n Nigel Cannonbait aka Michael Kent Miller (smile)

Great leads for when one is constipated with "the writer's block," Will - thanks. Another consideration: look to the "Sender" in your Bulk or Spam folder... Of course, there's always "current events" - like who can resist the marriage magic of Nicolas or Carla...even Bruni would work. And Elysee Palace - what a name for a femme fatale! - could rival Paris Hilton... In the name of, Michael
