The showcase of his line was consistent with his previous work. Simplicity and understated glamour ruled the runway. Rodriguez experimented with mainly solid blacks, whites and teals and occasional splashes of pink for a line that was flirty but mature. His dresses were not tightly fitted but instead hung like loosely fitted drapes. All the clothes were very settled yet complimenting to a woman's figure. His clothes said being unovertly sexy is what sexy is. The understatement of sex is much more alluring and satisfying then looking as if you are trying to exude it.
The style was consistent with a classic era of traditional glamour that Rodriguez is known for. He has been titled "the Jackie O kind-of designer." Ironically, Rodriguez's fame was catapulted by a Kennedy. The Parsons School graduate's first collection was in 1997. His line was such a hit that Carolyn Bessete insisted he design the dress for her wedding to John F. Kennedy Jr. After the dress was seen in millions of magazines, Rodriguez predictably became a favorite amongst starlets and socialites. Since then he has never stepped too far away from the style he represents and creates. This year was no exception for the minimalist king. He showcased tailored bolero's and patent raincoats. He paired scissor-spliced jackets intricately seamed with sharply cut pants ending just above the ankles. His evening wear was very gentle and composed. Sleek and luxurious.
This collection is a perfect collection for Nicole Ritchie, Eva Mendez, Kerry Washington and Mischa Barton. My absolute favorite was a pure white dress adorned with a simple but stylish black belt. Very minimal again, yet chic. The 2007 collection skowed why Rodriguez is the only designer to win back to back CFDA award, as well as a Vogue/VH1 award for outstanding achievement in fashion. The collection was indeed Pret-a-Porter (ready to wear). Anyone would feel at ease wearing the clothes straight off the runway. Not every designer can pull that off without alterations. The intimate affair has begun again.
New York Fashion Week will begin September seventh through the fourteenth. See you at the tents.
