Sorrento, Italy
Sorrento, Italy is actually a small city in the Campania region of Italy in the Southwest of the country. Located high in the hilly countryside, it overlooks the Bay of Naples and the city of Naples itself so the views are simply awesome. They will undoubtedly take your breath away.
The history of Sorrento can be traced back to at least 600BC as a result of archaeological finds in the local area. It was known as Sorrentum in the Roman period and was protected against the effect of the volcano Vesuvius as a result of the natural cliffs and gorges that surround it. These are still evident today, but it is a little scary just how close the volcano actually is. You can see it across the bay on a clear day from any number of points in the city. All of the above is why Sorrento, Italy has amazing historical sites for you to explore!
Sorrento, Italy is home to 15,000 natives and is a popular vacation destination for hundreds of people that return year after year. There are many reasons why, a few of which are outlined below
Sorrento Hotels
The Sorrento hotels are absolutely fantastic. The customer service is exceptional, the food is to die for and the quality of the rooms is second to none. As such, you are guaranteed a comfortable stay. There are many Sorrento hotels to choose from but the one I would recommend is located outside of the city.
The Grande Nastro Azurro is a five-minute drive out of the city, but is one of the friendliest Sorrento hotels available to you. It has a swimming pool, tennis courts and an outdoor bar. The rooms are of the highest quality with comfortable beds, an outdoor terrace and plenty of space to move around. If you choose to go on a half board vacation then the food will blow you away. It is always fresh and cooked on the premises. With four courses and a fruit and vegetables table for you to help yourself, you will be spoilt for choice!
Although the Grande Nastro Azurro is a little out of the way and not really within walking distance of the city, this one of the Sorrento Hotels does offer a free shuttle bus into and back from town at regular intervals throughout the day so transport is no issue. The views you have of the bay area on the way into Sorrento, Italy will be worth the journey.
Sorrento Weather
The Sorrento weather is extremely warm in the summer, with temperatures often rising above 30C. It is slightly clear in April, May and September but June, July and August can be somewhat uncomfortable if you do not like the heat.
As Sorrento, Italy is right on the water, the Sorrento weather may well include thunderstorms from time to time. However, they do not last long and serve to clear the air of humidity. As such, you will welcome them and enjoy the lights show when they do happen!
Sorrento Attractions
Sorrento, Italy is well known for its diversity and there will never be a dull moment during your vacation. Sorrento attractions are plentiful so it is worth planning out your week as soon as you get there to make sure that you take the Sorrento attractions you want to see in.
There are numerous cruises that leave from the docks all week, with hydrofoils to Capri every day and other boats that go to the surrounding islands, including Procida and Ischia. You can also travel to Amalfi via the Amalfi Drive, a narrow road that winds through the cliffs above the Mediterranean. This trip will provide you with some of the most breathtaking views you have ever and will ever see. If you are feeling brave then you can also hike up Vesuvius, which is still an active volcano, and then take a trip to the ruins of Pompeii. This is an absolute must. If you want to fully experience Sorrento attractions then you have to visit Pompeii!
Other Sorrento attractions include the main square, Piazza Tasso. You can sit there and watch the world go by whilst eating outside one of the many cafes that serve delicious food. At night, the Piazza is illuminated with small lamps and lights whilst being closed to traffic so you can enjoy the ambiance.
There are many little shops in the drains, as well as many cafes and coffee shops. To fully experience Sorrento, Italy, you have to spend at least one day wandering around. The atmosphere is laid back and relaxing, which makes it the perfect vacation spot. Once you have been there once, you will return there again and again.
