The Nature Coast in Citrus County, Florida

Linda Stamberger
Florida has a rich resource of nature areas and parks, teeming with fishing spots and wildlife. In Citrus County Florida on the Gulf Coast, there is an area along Highway-19 that has quaint, country towns in what is traditionally known as "Old Florida." These are the sections of Florida that have remained somewhat rural; with rolling countryside, and fantastic recreational areas for boaters and fishermen.

King's Bay

King's Bay in Crystal River is a great spot for both locals and tourists to fish. This area is known to attract professional fishermen from all over the world, to compete in king tarpon and redfish tournaments. There are all kinds of fish worth fishing in the bay, and the surrounding area is truly beautiful. Some types of fish include small sharks, oysters and flounder in the shallow areas, speckled trout, angel, Spanish mackerel, sheepshead, grouper, mangrove snapper, and cobia. Fishermen competing in local tournaments and recreational enthusiasts use a fly rod with spinning tackle. A variety of bait can be used from simple worms, to small bait fish and shrimp.

The creek areas in Crystal River have meaty fish that are good fighters, and make good eating fish. Fish must be of regulatory size. If they are too small, they should be re-released back into the water. Catch and release is common amongst sporting fishermen, for the fish can re-populate once released, and make better catches when bigger.
Fishermen tend to use light spinning tackle or a bait casting rod when close to the shoreline. Small boats that hold one to two passengers is all that's needed close to shore and around the bay.

Cedar Key

Cedar Key is further down Highway 19 heading North, or to the Panhandle. This is an old Florida treasure, that is way off the beaten path. There is a long road called State Road 24, which leads down a rural pathway filled with overgrown palmetto bushes, and distinct Floridian flora and fauna. When you arrive at the end of the road there is the bay, and a little town, with locals and areas for vacationers. There is one grocery store in Cedar Key. The area of Cedar Key is literally tucked away, yet the annual seafood festival draws thousands of visitors each month. The fishing is very good in Cedar Key at the fishing doc end; which used to be a transportation point for timber in the past. Types of fish caught in Cedar Key include redfish, and similar fish found in Crystal River.
