playoffs that are in it. The worst team gets 250 pin pong balls out of 1,000, then the breakdown goes as follows; 199, 156, 119, 88, 53, 53, 19, 19 18, 8,7,6,5.
So while it is weighted to the worst team has a greater chance to get to pick first over the last few years it has not worked out that way. So the team in the most need of top draft picks is not getting them and continuing to suffer because of it.
The NFL is set up so the worst team gets the first pick; the second worst gets pick number 2 and so on. It means that the worst team has the greatest chance to draft the best player out there, or to trade that one pick away for more picks to another team. This has happened over the years, where the first team either drafts a player and trades them, or trades the pick away and gets more players and picks for it.
The NFL does this because they want there sport to stay competitive and to keep the public interested in the sport. The NFL draft is a television event, for 2 days it's all you see on ESPN, and for weeks to months before that it's all you hear about. The NFL has the best marketing of its product then any other sport and the draft set up is only one reason why.
The NBA is not helping to keep its teams competitive when you do not allow the worst team to get the number one pick making them better. When the worst team in your league gets shut out of the draft lottery because that's how the ping pong balls fall so to speak how can you say that you are being fair to the teams, and the fans of the struggling teams in you sport?
The system the NFL using may not be the best but it is far better then allowing the worst team to fall out of the opportunity to get help for the team. Fans are being cheated out of good teams with the system the NBA is currently using. The commissioner for the NBA is always making new rules to make the sport more marketable, maybe it is time to change the draft also.

Post a CommentI like the NBA setup better. For a number of reasons, it may not always make sense to reward the worst teams. Maybe the team has talent and is simply full of slackers and management that don't care. Maybe the third-to-last team is full of people who worked their butts off to get 30th place. Does the last place team really deserve a higher pick than a third-to-last place team? In fact, if I was on a struggling team, I would hope we lose our last few games so that we can draft that stud running back for next year. The NBA setup is much more logical. Now, the bottom two teams have almost an equal chance of the first pick. The bottom six teams all have a decent chance at it. And best of all, despite all this, the worst pick a last-place team can get is 4th. The lowest a 3rd placer can fall is 6 (which only has a 4% chance). The system is near flawless: It still helps the worse teams to improve, but not without intelligent draft choices and hard play on the field.
