It is true that you may be able to lose 5-10 pounds in your first week of dieting. However, this will fluctuate, as the weight you are losing initially is from water. It will increase and decrease as you hydrate your body and sweat. With fad diets that bank on this, the initial weight loss is generally where the results stop.
Many fad diets promote the idea of losing weight by consuming large amounts of one food group while totally avoiding another. Your body depends on a well balanced diet to be healthy. These fad diets will often recommend taking dietary supplements along with eating, but the pills are useless to your body if you are not also consuming certain foods. Doing such a diet will simply lead to being broke from purchasing vitamins, and possibly ill from malnutrition.
There are other fad diets that may not have the ridiculous claims or unhealthy methods, but they are usually involve an expensive membership or suggest purchasing their costly meals. The information these diets tend to provide is common sense, and the knowledge gain could have been found free online or from your doctor. They also may provide weight loss plans that are discouraging or difficult to follow, causing the user to give up after a short period of time.
Some of the fat diets out there are downright boring, and very limiting. They will completely cut you off from the foods you enjoy, which for some may be helpful. However, most be prefer to begin by decreasing their limit of unhealthy foods, rather than cutting them out of their diets altogether. A little sugar will not hurt if consumed in moderation. Forbidding yourself to have even one piece of candy can cause you to eventually cave and go back to your old eating habits.
As you can see, fad diets are, at best, a temporary solution to your weight loss problem. None of them promote a healthy lifestyle change, and simply focus on the "here and now." Most do not provide long term benefits, except to discourage you even further about your failures of losing weight.
