The Network in New York Announces Free Seminars in November

New Seminars for New Actors

Jesse Schmitt
There are many acting schools in New York City. According to a mass group email The Network, has just announced a number of events to get new actors and veterans involved in the spiraling success of their program. According to their website "The Network is a place where Metropolitan area theatre and film artists and the agents, managers and casting directors looking to work with them can meet, communicate and connect in a safe and creative atmosphere."

While many who have been in New York for some time may turn their head and cough at this particular notion of such a utopian fairy tale land, there is something to be excited about by The Network. Namely that they're offering people the ability to, well, Network! And with a number of low cost and free workshops pending, they are worth at least a moment or two of your time if you're an actor of any stripe in the city that never sleeps, because everyone who's ever missed an opportunity for advancement knows all too well about missed opportunities.

What The Network appears to be all about is the art of networking and there are a number of events in the coming days where actors may wish to come with their headshot and resume or at least a business card and an open mind so that they can see for themselves and judge just what The Network is all about.

The two free seminars in November appear to be intriguing and worth a look. The first is called The Art of the 10 Minute Meeting on Monday November 16. People often don't realize the problem about time (it's fleeting) until it's been wasted; The Network would like to help the beginning actor make the best use of this time in front of agents and casting directors. The free introductory class promises to give the thespian the skills necessary to walk into any agent meeting with the "language and insight needed to present your product effectively."

The second free seminar in November is called "Demystifying the Headshot: Images That Work For You." Tuesday, November 20 from 6:30 - 8PM at the Paula Barr Studio (508 W 26th St Studio 9G) "world-renown" photographer Paula Barr and her "industry guests" will help students understand the benefits of shooting film, natural light, and reproducing from silver prints. Also, she'll talk about choosing shots that "capture you, what agents and casting directors look for in a shot and trends in the industry."

While road weary veterans of this well worn business may take a pass, this seems to be an inviting way for a newbie in the business to get their feet wet without breaking the bank. If you like what you find, The Network also has a number of other paid classes that are offered throughout the colder months. So leave your checkbook at home and give their office a jingle; you can register by calling The Network at 212-239-3198 or check their website for schedule updates and details.
