The Never Ending Argument: DIRECTV Vs Dish Network Satellite TV

Satelllite TV Providers

Ron Legarski
There is a constant debate of satellite television providers. There are only two major companies that offer satellite television, therefore the DIRECTV vs Dish Network Satellite TV debate will, most likely, last forever. The debate is based on the fact that these two companies offer TV programming that is similar to each other and include many of the same packages. Still, there are some differences.

Both companies offer a basic programming package that does not contain all the frills and thrills of the more expensive packages. The main difference in the packages is the channel options. The basic package with Dish Network does not offer a lot of the more popular channels that DIRECTV does. The Dish Network basic package does not include MSNBC, Bravo, FX, or Animal Planet, along with over thirty more that DIRECTV does offer.

Another similarity and big difference, at the same time is both companies' sports programming. Both offer a substantial sports package but many will argue that the sports package through DIRECTV is better than Dish Network. Huge sports fans agree that DIRECTV has more selections to choose from. Still, both companies offer NBA League Pass, NFL Sunday Ticket, and the MLB League Pass.

One of the newest arguments added to this never ending debate is the availability of High Definition programming. Both companies carry a rather suitable lineup of High Definition channels. But the channel options offered by Dish Network are overshadowed by the vast amount of channels offered by DIRECTV. High definition television is perfect so watching live sporting events, and especially viewing documentaries on stations like A&E and the Discovery Channel. Many people who own HD televisions and want many HD options choose DIRECTV.

Another difference is the availability of local channels. There was a time when DIRECTV did not carry local channels at all. This has now changed. Still, Dish Network does carry more local channels that its rival. This is important because customers like having access to the same local channels that their cable provider would offer. They like to be informed of what is happening in their community and their neighborhood.

Digital Video Recorders are growing in popularity with both companies. Dish Network and DIRECTV have made this technology available with any package that is purchased. With a DVR, a customer can record shows and watch them later. The only difference in the service that both companies provide is how much space is provided for recording. It is argued that DIRECTV has more storage space, but Dish Network now provides options for DVRs so storage space is decided by the customer. Even with this new technology, both offer the ability to set the recorder from a cell phone or a computer with an Internet connection.

Because these two companies are so similar, choosing between the two of them is a hard decision. Both have very loyal customers who will spark the DIRECTV vs Dish Network Satellite TV argument, any time and any place. Though it may be tough to choose between the two companies right away, the task can be made easier by simply knowing what is important to you and how much you are willing to pay.
