The Next Generation's Mission

The Children of Tomorrow

H. Kris Thomas
God, where is my Moses staff?
Why not let me part the tepid sea
That I swim in?
Say I'll escape the fear that hunts me down
And buries me deep

And where is the power
To turn rods into serpents
Shaming the disbelievers that mock the fervor of my passions

I'm praying in each breath
There there's no sin in concession
No foible in obsessing
On rewriting the script that plays out my life
I'm thinking about how to undo your doing
You're wretched requirement of death

And I've not yet given up
On the joke that's been made of love
The finicky fantasy I disbelieve in
No romance
No falling
Only failing and treating
My bruised and bleeding knees

Now that I'm here
I'm not leaving
I'm staying put
As long as I can stand it
Making my mark
Revolutionizing thoughts on
Peace and love and need

In the mean time
I'll work on my dancing step
I'll learn to dance better
Fear less the water
Not mind getting soaked
In my good clothes

I will turn this brick box on its side
And sledge my way out
Yell duck as the pieces fall
Striking the ground and leaving their marks
Burying themselves in the soft, wet soil
Beneath the razor green
Soon beneath the soles of your feet
Then, the tread of your children's shoes
Down into the earth - embedded

And one day it will be
That we wake up to see
That the good is nothing new
It is as it should be
And the memory of wrongs will fade
And there will be only moments of sadness
We'll not be required to endure sadness for lifetimes
We'll be better off

We are not saints
We are the future
Refusing to retreat to apathy
Embracing sympathy
Perfecting the art of empathy
On-lookers
Feel free to look on

For now, pay me no mind
Tell me to remain silent
Tell me I know nothing
Soon enough, you'll know my name
Because we will be the change
We will bring the change
