Because big sunspots haven't been formed since last year some scientists think that the global warming has stopped and a new Ice Age will soon start. These scientists say that a Sun with sunspots and with a strong magnetic field defend the Earth from cosmic rays and that these rays contribute to cloud formation.
The average temperature of Earth has started to decline, although the concentration of carbon dioxide has increase. Different agencies that track Earth's temperature have reported that in 2007 the Earth was cooler with 0.7C. Since 1930 the Earth wasn't so cold and this is the fasted temperature change in history. In 2007 the Antarctic ice extent was the greatest since its discovery, in China the winter was awful and it snowed in Baghdad.
The Sun has an 11 year cycle during which sunspot appear, in March 2007 was the minimum of activity and the end of the cycle. After the minimum a new cycle should have started, but the 24th cycle didn't start. In January 2008 some sunspots appear but they lasted only two days and again in April 2008 some sunspots appeared but they lasted only one day.
Between the Earth's weather and the Sun activity is a correlation; the last time when the Sun had very few sunspots was in 1790 the Dalton Minimum, an extremely cold period. If the global warming has stopped and if new sunspots don't appear we are moving towards a new Ice Age, like the one from 1100 that lasted several hundred years.
If a mini Ice Age starts billions of people will die from starvations and from the cold weather. The food supply will diminish and the population affected by weather will start migrating to warmer regions.
The worst case scenario is that a new Ice Age will start and most of Europe and North America will be under 1.5km of ice, this type of climate change happens every 10,000 years and the last Ice Age ended 11,000 years ago. Glaciations occur fast and they need a 12C drop to start.
If the current trend continues in 2027 the temperature will be 14C cooler, and strangely by the same time in 2029 the Apophis asteroid is predicted to hit the Earth in Costa Rica.
Even if the Ice Age doesn't start an asteroid will probably hit the Earth, creating thick clouds that will block the sun light. So what it's going to be "The Day After Tomorrow" or "Armageddon"?

Post a CommentGreat Article!!!! Good job on getting front page!
I don't think it's fair when people give bad article ratings just because they disagree with what you see as a possibility. It's still good writing. Anyway, I love the topic!
That particular asteroid presently has a 1 in 64,000,000 chance of hitting the Earth. Admitedly, this is a much greater chance than most, but... As for the harsh winters: powerful storms, whether hot or cold relative to us humans, actually verify the severe consequences of global warming. The more energy is contained in the planet's climatic cycles, the more severe all weather will become. Take NY - the *warmer* Lake Ontario is, the longer it churns out water vapor into the winter, and thus the more lake effect snow is produced. Finally, the idea that sun spots have any effect at all on climate is speculative at best. All that said, we are indeed long overdue for both an Ice Age and a major meteor impact. However, "overdue" doesn't count for much in real life, except to drive superstitions.
Oh Great. How will Al Gore get rich if he can't sell carbon offsets anymore?
I love these types of articles. Thanks!
Maybe it would be a good idea to invest in a good set of snow tires, huh?
I had actually heard that we were overdue for an iceage...
Interesting read, but this can cause a bit of a controversy, eh? Anyhow, I suppose it certainly is possible, and it would definitely be a scary scene if it happened. But who knows when it will happen? It's hard to tell.
Nice research. Hopefully more people will read this and realize that weather comes in cycles.
