The Next Michael Scott

For most Office fans, it is a well known fact that Steve Carell (actor who portrays Michael Scott) is leaving the show at the end of this current season. What hasn't been as clear is the individual who is going to take his place as the office manager. Speculation has been rampant, but it is possible a small cameo appearance in a recent episode is pointing out the next head of Sabre's Scranton region of operations.

Ricky Gervais is the mastermind behind the original British version of The Office. Not only did he create the show but he stared as regional manager David Brent. He is also an executive producer for the American version of the show. Many individuals have long speculated Ricky may reprise his role of David Brent on the U.S. version of the Office and it is starting to look like this is going to be the case. In a recent episode, Michael Scott (Steve Carell) is walking into an elevator, only to bump into the David Brent character. The two individuals spark up an instant friendship after sharing a few jokes that is right up both character's alley. At the end of the small quip David asks Michael if there is an opening at his current job, in which Michael replies that there isn't, but that he'll keep him posted.

This small exchange is the best sign as to Ricky Gervais taking over The Office, which is going to give a large sigh of relief to most fans of the show, as he as already proven exceptional at the position. Other names thrown out for the leading role just didn't have the same spark and may not have panned out as successfully.

Additional rumors are coming to fruition though, as David Brent (if Ricky does take the available role) is not going to instantly come in as Michael's replacement. It has been confirmed that Will Farrell is scheduled for four episodes at the end of this season and the beginning of next season to play the "fill in" office manager, until a replacement is found. This should add an interesting twist to how the staff interacts with one another, especially Dwight, as his friend and mentor will be gone. Will Farrell has in past television and movie cameos always added depth to the show, regardless of the character he is playing.

If Ricky Gervais comes to The Office he is going to add much needed flair to the program that has become slightly stagnate since Jim and Pam's engagement. It also opens up the opportunity for new jokes, especially with a possible British citizen running and learning how to manage an American office and staff. Thankfully, with Ricky Gervais there isn't going to be a learning curve as to the role, which any other actor is going to go through. This is a pivotal time for The Office, and it can't afford a lag period while transitioning between head office managers.
