The Night of a Kentucky Summer

Kitten Fleitz

The river rolls
sweeter than the sea.
Lapping waves are
hidden by trees.

Lightning bugs
flicker,
flicker over the water.
Competing with stars
to brighten the night
of a Kentucky summer.

Lacing my fingers tighter
into our entwined hands,
listening to the call,
the call
of a coyote running
across banks of rocky sand.

Turn to you,
your moonlit face.
Nothing more precious
in this place.

Another kiss,
one more lingering taste-
your eyes alight,
competing with stars
to brighten the night
of a Kentucky summer.
