The Night Old Man Mortimer Went Mad

A Halloween Poem for Kids!

Derek Odom
Old Man Mortimer,
One night he did dream,
Of such horrible visions,
That he woke with a scream,

He got out of his bed,
And he lit up a candle,
He walked to the door,
And grabbed at the handle.

It opened with a moan,
And what stood outside,
Drove Mortimer plum crazy,
His brain simply fried!

He ran and he ran,
Through the forest that night,
Jumping and starting,
At everything in sight.

When Mortimer finally did stop,
He collapsed to his knees,
The only sounds to be heard,
Were his heart and the breeze.

Now Mortimer just wanders,
Through the trees after dark,
Howling and crying,
Making dogs bark.

So the next time it's late,
And you hear something strange,
It could be Old Man Mortimer,
Lost and deranged.

Derek, I love it! It sounds like something in the style of the classic old Mother Goose book, which I love too.
