The Nightmare of Cockroaches

Why is it so Hard to Get Rid of Them?

Sarah
The annoying little creatures that everyones embarrassed to talk about. They crawl under sinks, and in and behind your appliances. They even hide behind the paneling or window trims in your home. Maybe you've tried everything to get rid of them but nothing has worked. Why is this you may ask? A cockroach can live off of almost anything. It is impossible to kill roaches by starving them. They eat almost anything they can find. They'll eat left over food, glue, wood, they'll even eat their own dead.

Cockroaches spread diseases such as hepatitis, gastroenteritis, salmonella, and can even cause allergies. Bacteria can last in the roaches digestive tract for months and is passed out in their droppings which can then be spread. Roaches can lay egg capsules that contain twenty or thirty eggs every week. Thats a lot of roach eggs. It is said that a roach would be the only thing to survive a nuclear war. This however is a myth. They could survive longer than humans but would eventually die of radiation poisoning. A roach can survive decapitation. The body and head could live for days without dying. A cockroaches life span is an average of twelve months.

Although it may take a while to get rid of them it can be done. Put away food in jars or in a place where cockroaches cant get to it. Wash dishes immediately after eating and remember to clean in and around appliances. A roach can live off of one meal for a long time so remember to clean where any food may have dropped. Try doing some home maintenance. Fixing any water leak is helpful. It also helps to caulk and cracks around doorways, trim, and cabinets. Although this method doesnt kill them it gives them fewer places to hide. It makes it easier to kill them using pesticides. Pesticides that can be used are products such as boric acid, fogger, roach motels, gel, and spray.

Great article Sarah, I SO know what you mean here. Our place had an infestation of Roaches but now very rarely do we see any at all. Now we just leave roach baits near the doors and no more problems. Just have to remember to change the baits every 3 months!

They are quite annoying. I used to live in the inner city in L.A. county in an apartent complex. They did not go away. Now I live in the HIgh Desert and they are never seen around there. At least that I know of.
