More Than Just a Basketball Sneaker, More Than an Accessory
Trust and believe, it was originally bought in New York City at a FootAction sneaker store that was going out of business in May 2004. It was worn seldomly, because of its interesting canvas material and its treasured selling price on the Internet; but after having burned out a couple of pairs of Air Jordans and a Ken Griffey signature shoe, the Air Force 1 seemed like a perfect temporary fill-in. In turn, it has become a staple in my fitness attire.
The AF1 is largely popular for its basic shape, but what many people don't know is that it became the first Nike shoe to employ the Air technology that the company is known for, and in fact, the basic styling and the thick midsole was introduced to its wearers so that upon breaking the shoe in, the AF1 would literally form-fit to the wearer's foot shape. Also, there is a medium-sized crater (or pivot point) under the medial ball of the foot, which was installed for better traction and grip the ground firmly.
For weight training of any kinds, this shoe is wonderful. With the durable rubber midsole/outsole, the AF1 can taking a licking and keep on ticking. Heavy squats, deadlifts and other standing weight-bearing exercises of any kind don't hurt the shoe's structural integrity at all. Just as well, the shoe's base (or last) is so stable, you don't feel flimsy in your movement, even in the low-cut version. While the basic Air is primitive to many of the updated modern features of the standard sneaker in this day and age, it provides surprisingly good comfort and the beefy, broken-in, self-molded insole does a good job as well.
While maybe not the ideal shoe in terms of weight and overall flexibility, if you need a generally good fitness shoe for the weights and cardio and can find an Air Force for cheap or need to make use of a scuffed-up pair, don't sleep on the old-school Nikes. They will do just the job you're calling for and may exceed your expectations.
