The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency - HBO's Brilliant New Series

Jennifer Vasconcelos
Based on a series of books by Author Alexander McCall Smith and set in Botswana Africa. The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency has all of the right ingredients to become an international sensation. I'm already hooked. Jill Scott is simply wonderful in her role as Precious Ramotswe, proprietor of The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, the first and only female detective agency in Botswana.

Precious is a simple woman, who has been through her share of hard times, with an abusive husband, whose beatings caused her to lose her unborn baby. After the death of her beloved father, Precious sells her substantial inheritance (one hundred and eighty cows) and opens the agency. Precious has an obvious knack for solving mysteries with her ability to easily see through the mundane and into the heart of the matter.

Precious hires Grace Makusti as her Secretary. Grace is not only a hard worker but she is a dedicated and loyal employee. Grace makes the perfect sidekick for precious helping her sort out details of the cases and filling in the gaps when necessary.

The cases, although slow to come at first, are as unique and interesting as the people of Botswana themselves. Episode one brings the case of a missing boy, held captive by a witchdoctor. Precious through some very bold moves, and some very extreme intimidation, forces the witchdoctors wife to tell her where the boy is. Then there is the case of a woman who suspects her husband is being unfaithful. Precious manages to prove this theory true innocently enough when the husband begins to hit on her, and she is able to photograph him kissing her, but when she presents his wife with the evidence, the wife is less than pleased with precious and it all backfires on her. This case turns the ending of the show quite comical.

I have followed this show through the first three episodes. Each episode has a happy ending, no cliff hangers or tricks to keep you tuning in each week. It's as though the directors know that the shows wholesome goodness will keep viewers coming back for more. This show has what so much of today's modern TV shows lack, characters we can love and admire because they truly want to see the world become a better place, even if it is only in their small section of it. The show is truly family friendly. I love that I can sit and watch it with my ten-year-old without having to worry about language or nudity.

Precious reminds me of a female version of detective Colombo, the way she sniffs out the truth and sometimes tricks others into telling it. The shows cinematography is wonderfully rich and vibrant and the music is just divine. The next time you are looking flipping through the channels keep an eye out for The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency. It is sure to warm your heart.

I love these books, so was concerned about the series, but it is great.

This is one of the best dramas I've ever seen on TV. When I watched the first episode of N1LDA, I almost fainted--Jill Scott, a phenomenal ACTRESS (who knew?), paid close attention to her voice coach and fairly channels Precious Ramotswe. Anika Noni Rose is fantastic as the proud yet endearing Grace Makutsi. The director and actors captured exactly the feel, the tenor, of the wonderful series of books by Alexander McCall Smith. From the beautiful cinematography to the whimsical animation in the credits, this is a splendid production. The show is pitch-perfect. Anyone out there who enjoyed the books should not miss this series if and when it's released on DVD. Now for a bit of negativity: When I viewed the first episode of N1LDA, I knew I was watching something different. I also knew that because it was different, it was doomed. It is so unlike anything remotely resembling the commercial pap to which we viewers are usually subjected. The sweet innocence and generosity of spir

I love Precious and Grace, and the simple spare good sense of McCall Smith's writing. this book series! I've read every single one of these books and wish there were more. I cannot believe HBO had the good taste to make this into a series. Wonder if it's still on. Never had HBO because there wasn't anything on there I would watch. BUt this I've GOT to see, and I would never have known about it if not for you -- so thanks big time!

A wholesome show? On HBO? It's about time! I cancelled my HBO last year simply because everything was so "not family". Go figure.
