Fifteen-year-old McKay Hatch is the founder the No Cussing Club. Started when McKay was only 14, the membership of the No Cussing Club has grown rapidly to where it now has over 30,000 members.
Interviewed recently online, McKay says he started the club after some of his friends dropped him because he asked them not to cuss around him. Later, many of the very same friends returned to hang around him because he didn't cuss.
It wasn't always easy for him, McKay said during an interview on the Jay Leno Show and with Fox News reporters. Although he has received, in his words, "tons," of encouraging e-mail from people who applaud his efforts, he has also received more than 60,000 negative e-mails from those who accuse him of trying to curtail freedom of speech, and some who have even threatened to kill him or his family.
It's hard to believe that something as innocent sounding as a No Cussing Club could draw death threats, but, when contacted by McKay's parents, the FBI took them seriously and are looking into the harrassment resulting from the negative e-mail.
Another, not-so-nice, response to the popularity of his club was that more than $2,000 worth of pizza has been delivered to the Hatch home. According to McKay, his family likes pizza, but was not too keen on being expected to pay $2,000 for pizza they hadn't ordered.
One good thing about all the negative mail against his club, McKay says, is that it makes him more determined than ever to continue his work with his own local club and with getting the word out to other teens worldwide who what to start their own No Cussing Clubs. Bullies are not going to stop him, he says.
