The Nocturne of Life

Ruth Carter
Darkness falls across the land.
Its thickness touches me as if as a hand.
A dark shadow appears in the still of night.
Can it be dispelled even by the moon's pale light?

I turn to gaze at the forest's trees.
They seem as giants upon darkness' sea.
I can hear the gentle call of the crow,
Yet I cannot comprehend how it might know
To where it should come or go
Since the darkness has consumed the land about
How shall such a creature know the way out?

Yet, I can hear the crow as it finds its way
To the one whom it must take away.
I look upon my shoulder, and there I see
The creature that has been watching over me.

As dawn begins to show her lovely face,
I no longer fear but have faith
That all will be well as the day is born
And I will no longer have need to mourn.
I realize that darkness will come again,
But for now, I may live among men.
