The Oasis, Austin Texas - Spectacular Views of Sunsets and Nudists

Carly Wyatt
Perched atop a cliff face 450 feet above Austin Texas' Lake Travis is The Oasis, a Tex-Mex restaurant and bar, famous for strong drinks and good food. Hit by lightening in June 2005, The Oasis almost burned entirely to the ground, losing 80% of the outdoor decks that make the restaurant famous. The Oasis has since been rebuilt bigger and better.

The building itself is Tuscan in design and seats up to 2000 patrons, which means the car park is expansive. Fear not though, on weekends you will find a fleet of golf carts to ferry you from your car to the entrance courtyard. The entry courtyard is a showcase for beautiful gardens and artworks. A gift shop sells souvenirs, and arts and craft stalls, mostly jewelry, line the courtyard, providing entertainment during waits for tables.

The Oasis Restaurant

The Oasis restaurant is a sprawling complex made up of multiple decks and terraces facing out over Lake Travis on the outskirts of Austin Texas, with almost every table providing spectacular views of the lake. And if the natural vista and luxury homes dotting the edge of Lake Travis don't appeal to you, perhaps the expansive view Austin's only nudist park, will.

A sea of multi-colored beach umbrellas, advertises the brand of tequila liberally added to the more than passable margaritas, and protects customers from the central Texas sun, as they dine at plastic outdoor furniture. The Oasis is by no means fine dining, but the ambiance is unmatched for summer al fresco dining.

The Oasis - Sunset Views and Photo Competition

The Oasis has an annual sunset photo competition, so bring along your camera and lenses. When the bell rings at sunset charge your glasses and starting taking snapshots. Be careful to keep your telephoto lens aimed at the horizon though, as you may seem more than you bargain for if aimed at the lake edge below the cliffs of the Oasis.

The Oasis - Views of Nudists at Hippie Hollow

Hippie Hollow is Austin's only nudist park, and during the summer months, you can find the young and beautiful taking part in the festivities along the water's edge. The Austin Gay and Lesbian community sponsors Splash Day on the holiday weekend's bookending summer: Memorial Day and Labor Day, at Hippie Hollow, drawing large crowds.

If you are looking for somewhere to spend a couple of lazy hours enjoying margaritas in the Texas sunshine, you can't go past The Oasis.

The Oasis Texas!

Currently, there is a development project ongoing on 500 acres adjacent to The Oasis, by the owners of the Oasis. The project includes additional restaurants, and boutique shops, and will aptly be named, The Oasis, Texas. The Oasis, Texas is currently scheduled for completion in September 2011.

Construction is visible from the car park, but does not interfere with the current Oasis experience.
