I was a big fan of Jun Planning's Pullip dolls for about four months when I discovered Obitsu bodies. I was browsing the custom Pullip section of a doll forum, when I stumbled across a custom piece of work that nearly knocked me out of my chair. The doll was amazing. She had custom eyes, beautiful blushed cheeks, and a new shiny wig. Then I scrolled down to the next photo. I couldn't believe the poses the doll was holding!. Surely, none of mine could pose like that. The curves of the body were also something I noticed. I hadn't seen a doll body quite like that before. So I asked about her. It was then that I was introduced to the world of Japanese Obitsu dolls. It was becoming more and more popular in the doll groups to use Obitsu bodies because of the poor quality bodies that many of their collector dolls were manufactured with.
Not only do many people buy Obitsu to make 'hybrid' dolls with their own beloved doll heads; people also buy Obitsu with the purpose of using them with Obitsu manufactured heads. The heads come in a wide variety just as the bodies do, and most of them come blank, which is very appealing to those in the doll community who like to repaint dolls for themselves or to sell. I've heard of quite a few people making a good living from painting dolls to make Ooak (one-of-a-kind) creations. They also make wonderful gifts for the little girl or fully grown doll collector in your life.
Obitsu heads come bald or with pre-rooted hair, with a rainbow of colors to choose from for the hair. They even have pre-painted heads for people who don't like to paint their own doll faces. The Obitsu bodies and heads come in White skin tone, Flesh skin tone, black and even clear or silver skin tone. They have even come out with beautiful tan Coconut and Marrone skin tone, which are getting harder to find as of late.
Obitsu also comes in many different sizes, ranging from 21 cm all the way up to 60 cm. Not only do they offer the many different sizes to choose from, but they also offer different styles within the sizes for each body. You can choose bust sizes and types, as well as having the option of magnets in the feet for the doll to stand on a small steel plate that acts as a stand. Obitsu dolls are definitely capable of standing on their own, but many people like the option of the magnet plate because it is possible to have the doll stand in some very interesting poses for display, without the worry of them falling over.
People collect dolls for many different reasons, and a popular reason for that is because people like to photograph their dolls for artistic purposes. I have done this many times, and have to say that I definitely enjoy photographing a doll with an Obitsu body the most, because of the many poses and options I have with the doll. Obitsu dolls have up to 28 points of articulation, depending on which body style you choose. Lots of collectors in the Asian Ball-Jointed Doll community have used the large 60cm Obitsu body for their resin doll heads, and they can hold more poses on this body than they ever thought possible.
Custom dolls are definitely growing in popularity, and Obitsu is coming out with newer types to cater to the many different demands of the doll community.
It's true, Obitsu is becoming more popular every day. If you are a doll collector, I would definitely recommend checking out Obitsu for your next purchase. They are definitely giving Barbie a run for her money. You can buy them from Parabox Japan, or even in the USA from JunkySpot.com, which is the premier Obitsu and Parabox doll distributor in the United States. I would also recommend joining a doll forum, which can be found through the Junky Spot website or even a Google search, to find out more about these dolls and how to customize them-or even to gawk at the many photo galleries of other collector's One-of-a-kind creations.
