The Obstacles of Addiction

Amanda Lay
There is a radio program airing right now that is discussing the issue of drug addiction and the pros and cons of the legalization of certain drugs in the United States . I am opposed to the legalization of marijuana, even for medical purposes. First and foremost, there are so many medical advances today that I think it is very possible to manage pain and many other conditions in an alternative way without the legalization of marijuana. I understand that there are those who are in favor of the legalization of marijuana for medicinal and pain management purposes. It seems to me that there are other ways to manage those issues effectively other than the legalization of a substance to which someone could easily become addicted.

Secondly, alcohol is another subject that it is important to address. It is important to note that alcohol is not an issue or concern for everyone. Many people drink alcohol for celebrations, social occasions, enjoyment or religious observances and not experience any problems or issues with alcohol at all. However, people who experience the challenges of alcoholism are often in a struggle to stay sober because their brains become chemically dependent on the alcohol. The person's brain begins to be dependent on the chemical of alcohol in order for them to function.

Tobacco is one of the largest money-making crops in the United States . Smoking related illnesses are the second leading cause of death in the United States. Smoking and its health risks is an issue that is close to my heart. My Granny was a lifelong smoker. She just passed away this past summer from emphysema, COPD and pulmonary fibrosis. Although it makes me very sad right now when I see people who are smoking, I also know that people are free to make their own choices in life.

We each make many decisions and choices in the course of our lives each and every day. Each choice that we make in our lives carries a risk, some choices come with a reward. Often, choices and decisions come with many negatives and consequences as well. Drug addiction is no different. What may appear to someone to be satisfying and rewarding in the beginning may turn out to have risks that a person may choose to ignore. Taking risks to use drugs can often lead to serious negative consequences in the long run.
