'The Office' - Colorado Over Scranton ...Say It Isn't So Michael Scott!

(Episode Re-Cap: Garage Sale (3/24/2011))

Rolando Cruz
Look, we all knew that the party would have to come to an end someday, and that Michael Scott would eventually leave the dysfunctional branch of Dunder-Miflin in Scranton, after all actor Steve Carell has steadily refused to sign on for another season. And yeah, the lovable idealistic dolt deserves a proper send off. Heck, he even deserves to find true love. But here is my beef with the current direction that this sage is taking; I no longer feel that Holly Flax (Amy Ryan) is right for Michael.

Michael and Holly

Yes, for a while it was nice to see Michael connect with someone like Holly, a girl who is not only capable of thinking like him, but who indulges him in his most ridiculous and impossible schemes. It was even nice of Holly to accept Michael's hand in marriage in the episode "Garage Sale (3/24/2011)." But isn't this relationship a bit too sweet? I mean, isn't it like over indulging in chocolate candy to the point of getting so sick that you try to seek relief by throwing up? I do not know about the rest of the shows fans, but I for one find myself cheering for Michael to hook up with the ever whacky and naïve Erin, and dumping Holly altogether. So pardon me for being less than enthusiastic about the grand proposal and the fact that Michael Scott will soon leave the comforts of Scranton for Holly Flax's Colorado. This is not the way I want to remember Michael Scott, and even a broken hearted Michael Scott limping into the sunset would offer me a level of relief from the saccharine overdoes which is the Scott-Flax relationship. At least their proposal was drowned out by a sprinkler system.

The Garage Sale

Besides the proposal, the episode that aired on March 24, centered on the wackiness that is an employee driven garage sale. Though the segment really lacked a lot of the over the top comedy that has sustained the series over the years, it nevertheless had its moment. Among these were the ridiculous game of "no-rule Dallas," played by Andy (Ed Helms), Darryl (Craig Robinson),and Kevin (Brian Baumgartner). The fact that Kevin ends up with everyone's money was a pleasant surprise. Almost as funny was how Dwight (Rainn Wilson) went around trading his way up from a tack to a telescope only to lose it to a bag of magical beans that Jim had at his table. A lot funnier would have been if he were able to turn the tables on Jim. Personally I would have kept the toy stuffed Lobster that Dwight got from Erin. Hey, it may not be a telescope, but it sure wasn't a small bag of magical beans.
