Each president who has taken the presidential oath and the office of the president has their own agenda that they want to try and pass in the nation. The president's agenda includes moral, social and econmic policy. The presdient usually tells the American people what he wants to accomplish in office when he gives his State of the Union address.
The president of the United States is elected by the people through an electoral college. In almost every election the president with the most popular votes around the country won the office of the presidency. However there have been some instances where a candidate won the electoral college and not the popular vote. These presidents include: John Quincy Adams, Rurherford B. Hayes, Benjamin Harrison and George W. Bush.
Almost anyone can become president of the United States provided that they are the minimum age to take office which is in the 35 years old and have been a native U.S. citizen with at least fourteen years of residency within the United States. The president cannot serve for more than two terms in office for a total of eight years in accordance with the twenty-second amendment.
The president is the head of a strong national government that shares power with the states in a federalist system of government. The vice president also makes up the executive branch. The Vice President doesn't have that many powers and duties that are expressed in the Constitution. The vice president is usually selected by a presidential candidate to balance out the ticket so that the candidate could win votes from another region of the nation. The Vice president is the second in command should anything happen to the president. The vice president oversees the Senate as the presiding officer and in caes of a tie can vote to break that tie.
Finally, the president can sign and negotiate treaties with foreign nations. Franklin and Theodore Roosevelt were magnificent presidents at negotiating in foreign affairs while Franklin Pierce was awful at it.
George Washinton is considered by most people to be the best U.S. president because of his leadership and policy making decisions. Warrne G. Harding is considered by some to be our worst president because he was only in office for two years and never really accomplished much of anything while he was in office.
