The Office's Season 7, Episode 7: Christening

Gwendolyn Taylor
What is the typical thing Michael Scott would do when he feels left out? He amusingly and uncomfortably tries to prove that he can handle it on his own and that he doesn't need anybody else. As usual, halfway into his decision he somehow ends up wanting to come back home to Dunder Mifflin.

In the seventh episode of The Office's season 7, it begins with Pam giving a presentation to the Dunder Mifflin employees for Hygiene Day. Kelly is unimpressed and interjects with a comment about Pam's mom. Michael contributes by stating that he has dated Pam's mom, but then is stopped from saying anymore by Jim. Pam then teaches the Dunder Mifflin group about the vampire cough, and both Erin and Dwight are intrigued. When Pam suggests providing hand sanitizers, Dwight disagrees and gives his own suggestion. He states that the employees should surround themselves with germs to build up their immune systems; he doesn't understand why no one else wants to do it.

The scene then pans out to Pam and Jim with their newborn Cece outside of a church. They are waiting to have Cece christened, and to their shock everyone from work arrives to the event against their knowledge. Apparently the Dunder Mifflin employees were invited by Michael, who still thinks he is Cece's godfather. The employees are already into a full swing of things, as Andy talks about how badly he wants kids. Dwight is at the entrance of the church service handing out Dunder Mifflin marketing pamphlets. Toby is struggling to enter the church because of prior negative experiences. Once the christening service begins, Michael wants to sit with Pam and Jim in the family section, since he thinks he is the godfather. Then Pam tells him he can't sit with them and makes him tell Cece out loud that he is not Cece's godfather. Pam then informs Michael that their friends, Seth and his wife, are the godparents. Michael then feels that Pam and Jim are "boxing him out."

The minister starts off the service with a quip about the Eagles playing, and then mentions that the young adult ministry is leaving for three months to build a school in Mexico. Meanwhile, Toby is still struggling to enter the church, because he feels guilty. People start to stand up offering their prayer requests, and Dwight is one of them. His prayer request however is to help the diminishing middle class with a 4% discount on paper products if people were to purchase a full-priced printer. In the meantime, Pam mentions that Cece needs a diaper change, and Jim takes Cece to the restroom. Cece makes an accident on her dress and Jim has to change her into a oversized blue t-shirt. Jim and Pam then present Cece to be christened while she is wearing the oversized blue t-shirt. Darrel is shown sleeping on Creed, as the service seems to be dragging on. While Stanley is trying to make a get-away, the minister mistakenly calls Pam and Jim as the "Halberts" and mentions that the "Halberts" are having a reception following the service. Pam and Jim are not the "Halberts" obviously and wish the minister could have at least said it was going to be an "intimate" reception. Michael overtly greets everybody at the service, in hopes of getting over his disappointment of no longer being Cece's godfather.

At the reception, Angela is shocked that it isn't more "intimate" reception, and makes some snarky remarks that Jesus isn't Pam and Jim's caterer (since they are shocked by how many people showed up) and aghast that they don't know all the church members. Most of the Dunder Mifflin employees are seated at a table together at the reception. Creed and Kevin are not satisfied with the reception food. Ryan mentions that the "Teacher for America" girls are hotter but nuts compared to the church's young adult ministry girls. The young adult ministry girls debrief the crowd about the purpose of their three month trip to Mexico. Dwight on the other hand is not paying attention and is on the phone with a client,. He says "My eleventh commandment is not to be undersold," and the client makes him a great offer. Then Dwight responds to his client "I am ready to love thy neighbor with those kinds of discounts." Andy makes fun of the youth ministry girl's remarks as she is talking and Michael asks him to shush.

Once the reception adjourns, Cece has fallen asleep. A church member complains of how Pam and Jim ran out of food (such as scones and cider). The church's young adult ministry is laughing and having fun at one table while the Dunder Mifflin group is somber. Michael unsuccessfully tries to give his employees a pep talk. Michael doesn't understand why the group doesn't want to get together and have some fun sometime. Then out of exasperation he tells Stanley and Kevin to stop worrying about what to eat next or else they are going to die. He then storms out of the building.

Jim leaves Cece with his grandma to be watched, who is also watching over a purse. Michael, after storming outside sees the church members cheering on and bidding farewell to the young adult ministry members, and he joins them. He comes on board the bus bound for Mexico and the young adult ministry members are delighted to have him join them. Before the bus has left, some of the Dunder Mifflin employees crowd around Michael's bus window. Oscar tells Michael to get off the bus. Darrell at first is the only member who agrees with Michael, while the rest wants Michael to be responsible and to come back to the company. Phyllis asks what to say if customers wonder why Michael is gone, and Michael tells his employees to tell their clients that Michael is now an angel. Erin then is impressed with Michael's tenacity. Andy, seeing that Erin is impressed, decides to join Michael on the bus in order to impress Erin. Once seated, Andy warns the young adult ministry group that he didn't bring any travel items.

Toby finally gathers up his nerves and enters the church. Once realizing that the service has already ended he asks God, "Why do you have to be so mean to me?" Jim comes back to find that his grandma has lost both Cece and the purse. Michael and Andy start getting antsy and try to figure out how long it is to Mexico and what was the reason they went on the bus in the first place. They figure out that they will be missing several important dates and that they need to get off the bus. Meanwhile back at the church, Jim frantically looks for Cece, and a church member mistakes Angela as the "tiny blonde women" who took Cece. Kevin tries to stop Angela and then they found out it was Jim's mom. Kevin continues searching Angela's bag and then finds out she was the one who stole all the scones. Angela denies the theft and says that someone else put the scones in her purse. The church members are disappointed when they find out that was the main bulk of the reception food and decide to go to a restaurant.

Back on the bus, Michael asks Andy to fake a seizure, and then Andy says he can fake crying. So Andy goes to the bus driver and asks if they can stop somewhere. The bus driver refuses, so Michael decides to join in. The young adult ministry members question Michael and Andy if are wanting out and both Michael and Andy start making a commotion of wanting to "stop the bus." The bus eventually stops for them in the middle of nowhere. One of the kids hastily joins them and tells them, "Don't say anything to my parents." Erin comes to pick them up and asks them if they want her to drop them off at their homes or at the church. Michael asks if anyone is still there and Erin says Kevin mentioned the movies so everyone went. They decide to go the movies (the youth kid wants to join them as well). The seventh episode of The Office's season 7 concludes with Michael, Andy, and one of the young adult ministry members in the car with Erin, tuning into the radio to the voice of Garrison Keillor story telling.
