The OJ Simpson Verdict: Was the Sentencing Fair?

Megan Butler
OJ Simpson was recently sentenced to concurrent sentences totaling 15 years, and no one is surprised. OJ Simpson may have escaped the noose once, but the recent OJ Simpson verdict seems to confirm that destiny is destiny.

If you've been living under a rock, somewhere I'll catch you up on the reason why Las Vegas judge Jackie Glass sentenced OJ Simpson to at least 15 years.

In a bizarre manifestation of what is obviously a thinly veiled anger-management problem, OJ Simpson accosted a vendor of sports memorabilia. OJ claimed that the items he was selling were stolen from him, and then proceeded to hold the sports vendor at gun point until he relinquished the items.

And that's the reason why 61-year-old OJ Simpson's sentencing was so harsh. 15 years for waving a gun in someone's face. The judge was careful to state that OJ Simpson's sentencing had nothing to do with his acquittal in 1995 of murder charges. But, the fact that the judge had to mention it at his sentencing means that it mattered. Let's face it. People are still angry that OJ Simpson was not sentenced 13 years ago. Especially after his inflammatory book.

But, even as the OJ Simpson verdict stands, OJ could in theory get out in as little as five years. But that's just for the sentencing charge. Simpson acquired a string of charges during the incident that have resulted in concurrent as well as additional consecutive sentences.

So it looks like OJ Simpson will be spend the last ten years of his life in prison. Its sort of heart breaking, especially after looking at the picture in the Los Angeles times. OJ looked old and cranky, like he needed a nap, not over a decade of sentencing. Its hard to understand how someone could not have mercy for that man if they weren't still holding him responsible for the crime he was acquitted of. I mean, clearly he has some issues. But does that warrant taking away the golden years of a 60-year-old man?

Is this just desserts? People seem to be thrilled with the Simpson verdict. Co-workers have been discussing it around water coolers nationwide. And the common sentiment seems to be that he deserves more time. No one seems to be able to give any concrete reasons why, though. But we know why, don't we?

Perhaps OJ Simpson will take this time in prison to learn the lesson that he should have 13 years ago. People are still pissed, their not going to forget, so lay low dummy.

OJ's sentence was a definite travesty of Justice. HE should not be in prison.

Well, I wasn't there so I don't know if he is a murderer or not. But I do think everyone deserves a little bit of compassion. But thanks for your comments! I wrote that in the hopes that it would open a debate. I'm glad to know what you think!

Please- he had this coming!!! Now the families of the real victims- excluding this killers own children, may find solace in the fact he will no longer be rubbing his "not guilty" verdict in their faces..................A little late, but justice served.

I feel very sorry for the kids. Yes, and a little bit sorry for OJ as well . . . I agree that his crime 13 years ago had an effect on the judge's decision to sentence him so harshly. It was pay-back time.

Are you kidding me???? Why are you worried about HIS "golden years?" Why aren't you upset abou the golden years that his murder victims are missing??
