Her fingers curled around the old locket,
two tiny photographs of a man and a woman, she never met,
passed generations before her,
yet depictions of their lives held within her hand.
Eyelids closed,
wondering what it may have been like,
so long ago.
She breathes in the dampened air, scent of grasses and earth,
gentle rainfall, and sounds of pebbles along a dirt road,
being moved by wheels and hooves.
A sweet voice bidding the young man goodbye.
He looks at her with love in his eyes,
and holds her in a warm embrace,
as he is off on a long day's journey,
to help provide a decent meal upon the table,
and he nods his head for the coachman to carry onward.
She waves, and holds up her long dress,
still slightly dragging in the wet grass,
to head back across the fields to her humble home.
Unknowingly, with child.
A child that would grow, and have a child of her own,
still knowing the beauty of a simpler life,
in the country, overlooking, caring for the children that played in the fields,
the man and woman, watching their grandchildren grow,
passing on tales of life, and the simpler life in not so simple times.
She remembers the tales told to her by her grandmother,
from her mother, and further back in history.
All the wonders of the old locket,
she could somehow see,
so vivid the details in the words she heard,
amid her chaotic world,
the envisioned simpler life,
a part of her own memory.
