The first thing that drew me in was the atmosphere, just the plain look from the outside told me it was unique. The main room is filled with the dim red glow from the signs in the from windows, this leads to a nice peaceful setting. The next thing that adds to the atmosphere is the art, with some great placed pieces the setting is almost perfect for a low key night out. Of course atmosphere is nothing without a decent location.
The Old Point Tavern is perfectly placed at probably the closest point between the circle in Indianapolis and Lockerbie Square. The setting is slower paced than directly down down, yet your still in the city. Parking is not as big of a problem either, with the local stores there is plenty of spots to choose from. Of course just like the name implies the whole tavern is a giant triangle placed in a sharp corner, giving the interior the best architectural shape I have sen to date.
Now comes the trick The food and drinks, what kind of tavern would it really be without great foods. The selection of foods is wonderful, yet simple. Personally I highly recommend the "Stuffed Stuff", a wonderful mix of chicken salad stuffed inside of either a large tomato, pineapple, or melon. Their sandwiches are nothing to laugh at either normally I would expect a less than average sandwich, but here at the Old Point Tavern they pull though again. Of course the drinks are great, but that would be expected of a tavern right? Well not always, I have been to many higher priced placed with a horrible selection of drinks. This is all done at a reasonable price too. There are no price gouging here, the beers are perfect price and so is the food. In todays economy pricing that fits the NORMAL persons wallet is very hard to find, I stress "normal" because I am not talking about government officials rolling in the dough.
The last thing that sets the Old Point Tavern part is by no means the least important factor for a restaurant, service is remarkable. The waiter or waitress will get your order, and be of a minimal presence. But if needed they also have a lot of insight into the drinks and foods, but they seems to automatically know when you want them to help out or when you just want to be alone, its rather amazing. All in all the Old Point Tavern is my number one place to eat near downtown Indianapolis, and it sure doe save the long drive to the outskirts for a decent meal. Do your self favor and stop in for lunch or diner, you will thank yourself.
